<div class="quote_poster">Skillz Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Wow hearing you guys talk about colleges and stuff like that really makes me worry because I haven't gotten into any of that yet. I don't even know what I want 2 study nor If i want to study in NY or some other state. I get good grades, 84 average and that was with getting a 45 in Math:(.

What should i be doing to get on the right track?</div>

What grade are you in? Unless you're a senior, just focus on the present. You know, improve your grades, get involved with some extra curriculars, etc. If you're a senior though, you'll probably be working with your guidance counselor in the next few months to start applying to different schools.

<div class="quote_poster">Voodoo Child Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">The top five schools are usually considered to be Northwestern, Columbia, Wisconsin, Missouri, and North Carolina.

If you've got the grades to get into Northwestern, I'd go for it. I was enrolled there until I had this opportunity with Tulane come around. I was thinking very seriously about going into journalism myself back then.

At the end of the day though, there's really not much $$$ in covering sports, and once you get a family, you won't want to be away from them half of the year.

Very true. Like I said earlier, I had really ****** grades but really high test scores, and I got into most of the schools I applied to because of it. Test scores really are more important than they make them seem, because I slacked off my entire time in high school and still got into some great universities.</div>

im sordof banking on that too, i have like a 85 averege. but my sat score is in the range of the schools i want to get in, so ima try to get my self up this year and pray for the best

If you don't have a great GPA, but score really well on the SATs, it makes up for the GPA. Also, if you get involved in a lot of extra activities, it makes up for the GPA as well. Colleges don't base everything off of just grades

My class times are terrible. I couldn't find the classes I wanted/needed lined up one after another. I've got classes on Mondays and Wednesdays.

    8:00AM - 9:00AM: History 101 - U.S. History Through Recon.
    9:30AM - 10:50AM: Administration of Justice 106 - Police Ethics
    12:30PM - 2:50PM: Spanish 101 - Spanish 1
    4:00PM - 5:50PM: Math 50 - Beginning Algebra

Yes, go ahead and laugh at me for the Beginning Algebra, but I'm absolutely terrible at math.

Side question, I heard a rumor that UC's do not count your freshman year? Is that true?

Dunno but I know they look most heavily at Junior and sophomore year, possibly first semester of senior year as well. I believe they also look at your cumulative HS GPA (which would include freshman year).

<div class="quote_poster">Master Shake Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Hey, you wanna be a sports writer? Same here. I'm going to try to get into Ryerson, a journalism college. I see all the guys here on the writing team, I wanna try to get on that, but I doubt it will ever happen. I'm trying to get into co-op with The Star or Fan 590.</div>

Ryerson is an amazing school for Journalism. I got rejected even though my marks surpassed the requirements and my essay was really good (edited my Journalism/Writer's Craft teacher among others). The competition is really tough so you better have very very good marks or a good writing portfolio.

Usually in England at 6th Form (Junior at HS), you take just 4 subjects. I'm special and am taking 5 [IMG], lol:
    Maths
Further Maths (meaning I do a 2-year maths course in 1 year, then a harder 2-year course the next year)
    Economics
    Business Studies
    Government & Politics

Unfortunately, there are no doss subjects here.

In the 10th grade, I wanted to get into journalism and writing, but decided against it, because I realized that I am a fairly good public speaker and basically love reading, writing and analyzing/interpreting any form of writing. I decided to get into law for that very reason. I'm planning on taking a public speaking course at University sometime next semester; the course is basically one that consists of giving three 3 minute speeches, which make up the bulk of the marks.

I've never visited Ryerson, but a couple of my friends are going there, and it's not for journalism. I'm curious; how is the campus? And what was the cut-off to get into the journalism program?

On another note, high school in Canada places way too much importance on just grades. If Canada adopted a testing feature like the States, it would be a better indication of one's intelligence. The Canadian system is kind of annoying in that there are people I know who basically just ride the co-tails of others towards a mark. They partner with a "smart" person throughout the whole course for the group/partner assignments, do a low-level job, make the partner fix everything (basically do the entire assignment), and then give high-fives when they get close to perfect.

I'm saying this because one of my friends actually did this to another girl for 2 courses, and ended up with 90's in both of them. If she had done it by herself, it would have been 60-70 at best. It's VERY easy to inflate your marks in high school.

For all of you aspiring writers, that's a great piece by J.A. Adande on why he became a sports writer.

He's a Northwestern alumn, btw, as are Michael Wilbon, Mike Greenburg, Rich Eisen, and most other successful sports writers these days it seems.
