Although they signed the three-point threat to a four-year $24 million contract as soon as they could, it has been quiet north of the border. The Raptors now have the hottest shooter in their backcourt, but is that enough in the newly competitive Eastern Conference? Basketball News? Ryan McNeill and Jessica Camerato tackle this question. </div> <div align="center">Source: HoopsWorld.com</div>
I like Ryan, but Jessica... They both have valid points on this signing, which showed the goods and bads of Jason Kapono. Ryan showed that Kapono can make Parker, Bosh and Andrea better, which I like. Jessica said that he lack of defense and drive to the hoop will hurt that Raptors. I think that he doesn't need to do that, because of Bosh, Andrea, Parker, Ford, Graham, Delfino.
That's the thing. It was a nice read, but I thought the whole point of the article was misguided. They looked at Jason Kapono as the biggest addition for the Raps and decided to compare him to the other big acquisitions in Atlantic Division, as a way of evaluating their offseasons. Toronto's offseason needs to be evaluated as a whole though, because the focus was on adding depth to an already solid core. They didn't go out and get a Garnett or Randolph, because they didn't need to. We're at the top right now and its the job of the other Atlantic teams to catch up with big moves. We just needed to round out our depth chart and focus on internal development.
^Good analysis. I was thinking close to the same thing. You can't compare a Kapono to a Garnett, it is like apples and oranges. We needed some more depth and shooting, we got that. Like Ryan stated, Colangelo is EOY for a reason. He went out and gave the Raptors improvement for shooting, slashing, and knowledge of the game. Kapono is going to take a lot of pressure off Bosh, Parker and Bargnani who will be able to dominate at their own games. I also found that Jessica forgot players like Delfino, Garbo, Graham, Calderon and Ford.
All strong points. I think what people are continuously forgetting is that Colangelo is a guy who builds team around their strengths and doesn't really take the ponit of view that he needs to plug a weakness. People said the same thing (defense) about the Suns. BC has continued to build around our ability to shoot. Double teaming bosh is going to be way harder this season with Kapono on the floor with the rest of our shooters. On not being as competitive as the rest of the East in making signings: I'm almost glad we're not. Loading up on large contracts and putting most of your chips on a few players is stupid. I'm more than happy to see us spread the money around rather than blow it on 3 or 4 big money guys.
Depth is gunna lead us to victory. I think that people like Jessica don't understand that Kapono is going to be a big factor for the Raptors. He will shoot the ball, which is what we need, a shooter. With that, we can use Parker to play his game; coming off screens, slashing and burning his defenders. Bosh will be able to play his man straight up because Kapono will keep his defender honest. Bargnani will still shoot the 3, mid-range and play with his back to the basket because he won't get double-teamed either. I love how we look this season. I like it much more then how the Celtics look.
