francis and james can't playmake that well they do at times but not as much as RAfer. Rafer = Pass-first PG who needs to be the primary playmaker.
I agree, Alston did a solid job last season running the offense. James and Francis are more like scoring PGs. But, chances are Alston is probably going to get traded.
I think yall are dead wrong calling Skip a play maker. He is a ball handler and nothing more....Last year TMac was the main play maker Last year the two ball handlers were Skip and JLIII. The Rockets brought in 3 PG that can handle the ball Plus have an offensive game. At no time was I ever impressed with Skip's ability to make something happen that got guys open shots. I don't know what yall were watching last year but Skip was not the play maker on the team. He brought the ball up and passed it to TMac and TMac ran the Offense.
Rafer isn't going to be the primary anything on our team next season. Isn't that obvious by now? Adelman's most successful teams employed a scoring PG (Terry Porter, Mike Bibby, Bobby Jackson). I think James and Francis fit that mold better than Rafer.
I wouldn't mind Mike James running the point. The Rockets need a solid PG who can pass and hit the 3. Mike James can do both. He has proven to avg. 20 ppg in his career. He should prove to be a solid starter.
Mike James and Steve Francis are scorers not passers. Rafer Alston is a pass-first PG. I hope he does remain as the starting one and if he does he better be able to be the primary playmaker this, and he should run the offense again.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Rafer Alston is a pass-first PG.</div> Not this again. I remember we had a small discussion, where it was pretty clear that Alston isn't a pass-first PG. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">I hope he does remain as the starting one and if he does he better be able to be the primary playmaker this, and he should run the offense again.</div> I really doubt Houston signed Steve Francis just to put him on the bench. He will start.

His tendencies are identical to Sam Cassell who is also 66% passing vs. 25% shooting per touches.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Why does he start? he came off the bench in New York? why would he get a free ticket to the starting lineup?</div> He came off the bench because the Knicks had/have Marbury. Seeing as how they couldn't compliment off each other because of the simliar style of play, Francis had to sit on the bench. No one would argue Marbury was the better player. (MrJ, correct me, if I'm wrong. You're more of a Knick fan, I'm a bit hazy right now) Out of 68 games he played in a Knicks jersey, he did start 45 of them. I'm not sure, what the reason was, injuries to others players? etc. My memory is a bit fuzzy right now. He doesn't get a free ticket to the starting lineup, but in my opinion, he should be the first option out of Mike James and Rafer Alston. When it turns out that Francis is better suited for the bench, thats when Alston or James should takeover.

So let's get down to the touchy subject -- are NBA players a little too interested in "getting their own" and not playing team ball as some college hoops fanatics would claim? Well, Bob Chaikin has for many years pioneered the idea of tracking player touches and charting what he calls the "Possession Factor" -- how often a guy passes, shoots, turns the ball over, or draws a foul. On a league wide basis for all touches that occur in a "reasonable attacking position" you'll find this: 61% - Pass 29% - Shoot 6% - Draw Foul 4% - Turnover So to paraphrase Mark Twain, "the rumors of the demise of team play in the NBA have been greatly exaggerated." Players on the whole overwhelmingly look to pass first, and with the most efficient shot option being a zero dribble finish/open look jumper, it's with good reason! Now that's not to say there aren't a couple of exceptions, and then the truly talented mega stars of the NBA could on occasion be chided for being too unselfish and letting their teammates be the possession users when the best option is just to keep going back to the well. Looking for NBA coverage at the "every touch" level? You won't have to look far: stop back in these parts during the playoffs! </div> http://82games.com/dribbles.htm I have all the stats from last season for each player, I just need to compile and organize it into an excel sheet.

Francis and James will fight for the starting position.

Rafer is a pass-first PG and a playmaker. He just wasn't used well as one with JVG.
