HOUSTON (Ticker) -- This is how the Houston Texans always wantedit to be.

With Matt Schaub and Ahman Green making their first starts forHouston, the Texans used an effective and methodical game planen route to a 20-3 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in the seasonopener for both teams Sunday.

Schaub completed 16-of-22 passes for 225 yards. including a77-yard touchdown to Andre Johnson in the second quarter. Greenand Ron Dayne were equally effective on the ground for theTexans as the two combined 106 yards.

After winning their first two season openers, the Texans lostthree straight and are now 1-0 for the first time since beatingthe Miami Dolphins in South Florida to start the 2003 season.

Damon Huard was unimpressive for the Chiefs, who committed fourturnovers. Huard completed 22-of-33 passes for 170 yards andtwo interceptions.

The Texans also bottled up Larry Johnson, who managed just 43rushing yards on 10 carries.

Houston scored twice in the second quarter and took a 10-0 intohalftime thanks to strong halves by Schaub and Green.

Green carried the ball nine time for 48 yards and Schaubcompleted 9-of-14 attempts for 156 yards, including the longstrike to Andre Johnson.

Kris Brown started the scoring with a 26-yard field goal at 7:33of the second quarter the Schaub hit Johnson 1:22 later.

The second half started with disaster for the Chiefs when KrisWilson fumbled after catching a pass from Huard. MarioWilliams, the No. 1 overall pick from 2006, picked up the looseball and returned it 38 yards for a TD, making it 17-0.

Williams finished with a career-high two sacks.

After Andre Johnson lost a fumble, the Chiefs got on the board with 30seconds left in the third quarter on Justin Medlock's 27-yardfield goal.

Medlock had missed a 30-yard field goal on the Chiefs' first possessionof the game.

With time winding down, the Texans took more than 10 minutes off theclock in the fourth quarter and capped that long drive with Brown'ssecond field goal of the day from 28 yards out.

Dayne and Green did most of the damage on the ground andcombined for 29 yards on 10 carries during the clock-eatingscoring drive.

Travis Johnson sealed things, picking off Huard near midfield.

HOUSTON (Ticker) - This is how the Houston Texans always wantedit to be.

"I think was important to go out there and play efficiently andmanage the game well," Schaub said. "We exectuted our game planand game in with a game play, which is ultimately what our goalis. We exceeded that today and beat a good football team."

Houston scored twice in the second quarter and took a 10-0 leadinto halftime thanks to strong halves by Schaub and Green.

Green carried the ball nine time for 48 yards and Schaubcompleted 9-of-14 attempts for 156 yards, including the longstrike to Andre Johnson.

"We have been working on that play for awhile, but it neveropened up like that before," Andre Johnson said. "Things arejust different now. All of the guys just have a lot ofconfidence and we don't panic. When we get in a tough situation,no one panicks. We just relax and see what we can do to make itright on the next play."

Kris Brown started the scoring with a 26-yard field goal at 7:33of the second quarter the Schaub hit Johnson 1:22 later.

The second half started in disaster for the Chiefs when KrisWilson fumbled after catching a pass from Huard. MarioWilliams, the No. 1 overall pick from 2006, picked up the looseball and returned it 38 yards for a TD, making it 17-0.

"The difference today was preparation during the week," Williamssaid. "Our scout team gave us a really good look this week. Ourwhole defense came out together and the way we approached thegame, we approached it as a unit of one. Everything thathappened to me, good or bad, we look at it as everyonetogether."

Williams finished with a career-high two sacks.

"(Williams' performance) did a lot for the football team, but Iwill tell you something interesting," Texans coach Gary Kubiaksaid. "We as a coaching staff sat up here Thursday nightand said that is the best practice we had ever seen (Williams)have since we have been here.

"We talked to him about that and it is great when you can tell aplayer, 'That's progress,' Thursday and then you can show himhow that equates on the field Sunday."

After Andre Johnson lost a fumble, the Chiefs got on the boardwith 30 seconds left in the third quarter on Justin Medlock's27-yard field goal.

Medlock had missed a 30-yard field goal on the Chiefs' firstpossession of the game.

"I don't know, I think I might have rushed that first one alittle bit," Medlock said. "It was all might fault and I have totake responsibility for it. I have to find a way to bounceback."

With time winding down, the Texans took more than 10 minutes offthe clock in the fourth quarter and capped that long drive withBrown's second field goal of the day from 28 yards out.

Dayne and Green did most of the damage on the ground andcombined for 29 yards on 10 carries during the clock-eatingscoring drive.

Travis Johnson sealed things, picking off Huard near midfield.

"The thing that disappoints most are the turnovers and ourinability to put points on the board when we got into position,"Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said. "You are kidding yourself ifyou think you can win a football game when you turn the ballover four times."

Re: NFL: KANSAS CITY (0-0) at HOUSTON (0-0)

    Ouch!

Onepositive from this game was that Sammy Parker and Dwayne Bowe should keep improving and be better recievers than we have had in a decade. Parker is playing like a man who wants to keep his job. I noticed him looking the balls into his hands with more regularity than he has done in the past. Bowe played like a rookie, but showed some skills.

Boone (DT from Chicago) was getting some serious pressure up the middle. Once Jared Allen returns from his league-imposed vacation, he and Tamba Hali should wreak some havoc if Boone can keep collapsing the center of the opponents o-line.

Larry never got enough carries to get into a rhythm. I understand lessening his wear and tear this year, but it's kind of silly to throw all that money at him and then not use him enough to win a game for you.

I really wanted Justin Phinesse to make the team at PR. INstead, Drummond steals the job and coughs up his first return in the redzone (the wrong one)!

Is it me or should practice squad player, Bobby Sippio be a starting wideout for this team? I also thought that the QB battle during camp showed me that Casey Printers should be leading the team. Instead, he was cut for a guy the Vikings released and is now back in the safe confines of the Canadian league. He does have a little trouble with the exchange from center, but he was also the only QB in camp/preseason that moved the offense. That is something that can be addressed by drilling it until his arms fall off. Again, what would the difference be in his fumbled exchange and Huards 2 INTs? At least Printers could move the chains and sustain a drive. If he gets into the redzone, put him on a leash and hand the rock to Larry until he crosses the goalline.

OK-ok, I'm venting a little, I just don't feel like the Chiefs have to fare as badly as I am afraid they are going to this season. As always though, I still think we are winning the Super Bowl until we are mathematically eliminated.

NFL: KANSAS CITY (0-0) at HOUSTON (0-0)

Schaub era starts in Houston

Kansas City (9-7) at Houston (6-10) Sunday 1:00 pm EDT

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- In years past, it would have been Trent Greenagainst David Carr. Now, it's Matt Schaub taking on DamonHuard.

The Kansas City Chiefs open their second season under HermanEdwards when they visit the Houston Texans in a battle of teamsdebuting new starting quarterbacks.

The Chiefs named Huard, an 11-year veteran, their No. 1quarterback in preseason. He received the nod over 24-year-oldBrodie Croyle, who did not help his cause by throwing aninterception in each of Kansas City's first three exhibitiongames - all losses.

Huard had not started since 2000 but guided the Chiefs to a 5-3record last year after Green went down with a concussion in theseason opener. Green, the Chiefs' starter since 2001, asked outof Kansas City when Huard re-signed in February and was tradedto the Miami Dolphins.

Edwards made the decision to go with Huard after Croyle, athird-round pick out of Alabama in 2005, completed only 5-of-17passes for 45 yards in a 30-7 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Huard, who backed up two of the most successful quarterbacks inNFL history - Dan Marino in Miami and Tom Brady in New England -was a pleasant surprise for the Chiefs last season. He helpedkeep the Chiefs in playoff contention, passing for 1,684 yardswith 11 touchdowns and only one interception.

The Texans also will have a new look as Carr, the team's firstdraft pick in 2002, was released after five years in Houston.Enter Schaub, who was Michael Vick's back in Atlanta the pastthree seasons.

Houston signed Schaub to a six-year, $48 million contract but heis untested, having started only two games in his career.

Carr enjoyed minimal success in Houston, passing for 59touchdowns and just over 13,000 yards. That did not translateto many wins for the Texans, who averaged just under fivevictories per season during Carr's tenure.

The other major addition for the Texans was running back AhmanGreen, who spent the past seven seasons with the Green BayPackers. Houston is hoping Green can regain his form from 2003,when he rushed for a career-high 1,883 yards and scored 20touchdowns. But at 30 years old, Green could be a gamble. Hemissed two games last season with a knee injury.
