Last season. those three didn't play a single game together. Nor did Krstic and Boone and Krstic and Nachbar barely played together. Before Krstic went down, Nachbar had five DNP's and had played only 64 minutes in the 12 games immediately prior to Krstic's injury. Lots of possibilities out there with those guys on the court, either as twosomes or a threesome.

And by the way, in the three full games before Krstic went down, he was on a roll, averaging 23.7 ppg, 7.3 rpg and shooting 64.3% from the floor. He had just begun hitting his stride.

Krstic and Boone would seem to have the potential to be a good combination, as would Boone and Nachbar. In fact, the Nets DID use a Marcus-[SG]-Nachbar-Boone-
lineup quite frequently last year, and they DID play well--as they did as the PF and center alongside the big three. Their worst performances appear to have come whenthe overrated Hassan Adams was also on the court (that trio was minus-25 in 25 minutes, according to 82games.com); if you take those out, the Boone-Nachbar combo was QUITE effective. Don't feel like adding together all the numbers from the non-intuitive, poorly designed 82games.com, but if you check outBoone's topfive-man combos you'll see that this is the case.

I question whether Krstic and Nachbar would work together, however, although maybe it would work if Boone is the PF in such a lineup, since he has the skills to grab offensive rebounds and score from underneath the basket. I'm really wary of placing too many jump-shooters in the game at the same time. Also, Krstic and Boki are probably two of thebottom-half defenders on the team. Boki claims that he is focusing on improving his defense in the offseason, and I guess we'll see; that may make a difference to Frank as to how often to play them together.

This may not be the best thread to bring this up, but there was a quote from Frank the other day that seemed to escape everyone's attention. I'll never find it again, but it suggested that one of his preseason goals is to try to implement more of a running game this year. If that's the case, then we might see a lot more of Boki and Boone on the court together, maybe as the 4 and 5. Maybe we'll see something like[PG]-Wright-RJ-Boki-Boone, or maybe use a similar lineup to gradually work Smokey into the game.

I just think people are underrating the Nets' possibilities once they are healthy. There are multiple scenarios upfront...we haven't even discussed the possibilities of adding Magloire and Williams to the mix (although neither are good passers, both CAN be good defenders in short stretches). As for a running game, that would seem to require bigger minutes for Boone, for Nachbar, for Williams as well as a belief someone is goingto be able to get the ball off the boards anddown. And I agree about Adams. As soon as I hear someone at the end of a bench described as an "energy player", I begin to think "limited skills...limited BBIQ". Rod Benson is described as an "energy player" by the way.

There's no question that Nets fans, as a whole, are among the most pessimistic bunches I've ever come across. As forreporters underestimating the Nets . . .no offense, but who cares. I do worry, though, that Boki will not last the season, especially if he doesn't show drastic improvement on the defensive side. And that will just put more pressure on Antoine Wright. As for Benson, I think I'd rather have someone like him around that some veteran that scored six PPG for a playoff-bound team eight years ago, or a 36-year-old who has played sparingly (if at all) for the past few years. Linton Johnson may not have worked out, but Mikki Moore did.
I'm looking forward to seeing if Boone can take the next leap forward. He's still exactly they type of player the Nets need, and can fill a big role. What was disheartening was that, despite his reputation as being advanced defensively, he often looked lost and seemed to give up on his man. Hopefully that will change . . . being smart can be a big help, and overcome certain lack of skiills, but it can also hurt, if he overthinks and gets down on himself if he makes one or two mistakes.

Boki better play defense because the three point specialists after him on the roster are named and, and, and and...never mind. Even if Marcus Williams, Antoine Wright, Robert Hite and Krstic improved dramatically in that regard, they're not getting to 42% and 112 three pointers. I was not crazy about Posey, but if Nachbar has to sit for whatever reason, the Nets will have issues. Boone is nice but I note that he may be the worst jump shooter in the NBA...outside of Shaq. Malik Allen (who was supposed to sign non guaranteed contract Friday...but no word) would be a nice pick up...and only 29. I have to think the Nets see SOMETHING in Benson considering the other non-roster guys coming into camp other than him are all vets. Hite has one year, Cleaves four years and Allen seven years NBA experience. I suspect there are probably one or two others out there we dont know about yet.

Also, among young Nets big men, I now believe that Boone have only the third highest SAT scores, after Williams and probably Benson. Boone had 1200, Williams 1280 and Benson was a California Governors Scholar with enough smarts to graduate from Berkeley.

I note that Antoine Wright had a higher three-point shooting percentage after the all-star break last year . . . but of course he took aroundone attempt per game. But you're right; the key word is "specialist." The Netsare lackingshooters off the bench for instant offense when they need it. As for Boone . . . he just needs to find his niche. Mourning isn't such a hot shooter, either, but he's done OK for himself. He doesn't need to shoot jumpshots if he's on the court with some combination of Boki, Carter, and Krstic--but his presence will force opposing defenses to stay honest. They can't completely ignore him like they can Collins, because he'll just cut to the basket and score. Hopefully, Sean Willimas will develop that ability, too. And quickly.

I thought I read once that Boone's SAT score was a little higher, maybe 1250. Not that it matters.

If Boone had more offensive skills, he would have been a top-five pick. The thing is, as I've been saying since months before he was drafted, Boone will make a better NJ Net than he will be an NBA player, because his particular skills are a perfect match for their needs. They just need an offensive-rebound-grabbinggarbage scorer--but someone who is deadly when left unguarded under the basket.

As for the fumbling passes, we've also seen him cleanly catch and shoot. I suspect that he just has to get used to the idea that he could get the ball in the blink of an eye, at any time. Remember, he missed training camp last year. Hopefully, he'll be recovered from his MINOR knee surgery by next month, and can particulate fully in all the drills and scrimages.

His hands are fine. In fact, his ability to take a pass and finish is an asset, not a liability. He ain't Zo. Zo had and still has great physical strength. Boone simply does not have NBA big man strength. He has to develop some other offensive weapons or he is Kenny "Sky" Walker, not a good thing. His knee surgery may have been minor but his recovery has taken longer than expected, the Record reported. That cant be good for anything other than 1) outside shooting and 2) upper body strength. Let's hope he has worked on both.

1280 is still better than 1250 and Benson was a first rate student as well. And if you havent seen Benson playing volleyball for Cal, now is the time and the place...

So am I. His offensive game is lacking, the majority of last year's points were from offensive reboundings, and pick-&-rolls, from Vince Carter. That gets old, and teams eventually adjust to it, so Boone needs to define his game much more. A mid-range jumper is good, or rather some post moves, to be more of a threat. From what I hear, he has been working on his game during the summer, which a must, so I'm looking to see what he brings this season.

Another important thing is, if he plans to run fastbreaks with J-Kidd and the squad, he needs to learn to catch passes. He tends to fumble the ball often, because he doesn't expect them, or that they just slip out of his hands.

If Boone had more offensive skills, he would have been a top-five pick. The thing is, as I've been saying since months before he was drafted, Boone will make a better NJ Net than he will be an NBA player, because his particular skills are a perfect match for their needs. They just need an offensive-rebound-grabbing garbage scorer--but someone who is deadly when left unguarded under the basket.

WOW...that is just unfair. for a dude that big and with that much hops...he should not be allowed to play volleyball. hahaha.

how is this kid not a great shotblocker, after doing volleyball? it's pretty disappointing to see his bpg stats in college and D-League.

Starting in the West, 6-10 senior Rod Benson (Torrey Pines H.S./San Diego) is still a raw talent but has upside and has come a long way since first beginning to learn under head coach John Olive, formerly the head coach at Loyola Marymount and also an assistant at Villanova under Rollie Massimmino. The Ivies, Pepperdine, UC Santa Barbara, San Diego and Davidson -- which has established a recruiting presence in the area -- have been on Benson. Not that many people have really seen Benson, who is now starting to attract interest from various schools in the Pac-10, Mountain West and WAC. Benson carries a 3.2 GPA, and boasts a 1,300 SAT.

it's nice to see our highly intelligent players...and i don't mean to put you down but...what about Benson as a player? i've read about his college play and D-League stint, but will he succeed with this Nets team, and with Frank?

Benson would be there strictly for comedy and towel waving distractions.

Can't wait to see the Boone-Krstic combo. I think Boone's slashing game goes well with Krstic's outside touch. If only Boone could rebound a bit better.

After the all-star game last year, Boone averaged 1.2 offensive rerounds per game, and 3.5 total rebounds per game, in under 14 minutes per game. Prorate that out. In the month of March, in 15 games, he averaged 1.4 offensive rebounds per game and 4.1 total rebounds per game, in just under 14 minutes per game. Prorate THAT out. Incidentally, there were just 12 players in the NBA that averaged more that three offensive rebounds per game, and just three that averaged more than 3.5. Just what are your expectations?

I was going to start a 96 minutes thread about the minutes distribution at the 4 & 5, but since the topic has been touched upon, here, there is no need.

It looks to me like Krstic will be the only Nets big man to average over 22 MPG as the rest are a bunch of role players that will get adjusted in and out of the lineup depending upon matchups.
