Morneau's power splurge leads Twins past White Sox

MINNESOTA 9, CHI WHITE SOX 2
MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Apparently one MVP award isn't enoughfor Justin Morneau.

Morneau homered for the fifth time in his last seven games anddrove in four runs to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 9-2 victoryover the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

The 2006 American League MVP hit his 16th home run of the seasonoff Chicago starter John Danks (3-5) - a two-run blast to starta four-run third inning. He hit a two-run double in the fifthinning and finished the game 3-for-4 with a walk. All threehits were for extra bases.

"Morneau hit the big home run to kind of sling-shot us and wewere able to take advantage after that," Twins outfielderMichael Cuddyer said. "We expect him to put together goodat-bats and that's what he expects out of himself. In arun-producing situation, he expects to come through. You canjust see the confidence level is there."

Minnesota has won six of its last seven games and will try for asweep of the three-game series on Wednesday.

Boof Bonser (4-1) won for the fourth time in his last fourstarts after going 0-1 in his first seven outings to begin theseason. Bonser allowed two runs - one earned - on seven hitsand two walks while striking out six. He has allowed two earnedruns or less in six of his last seven starts. He hasn'tallowed a home run in any of his last three appearances afterallowing nine in his first eight starts.

"He's using all of his pitches now," Twins manager RonGardenhire said. "His fastball was so-so, but his breaking ballwas pretty good. It got him out of some messes tonight."

Although he had an eight-run lead, his mettle was tested in theseventh inning with the bases loaded and one out with Jim Thomeat the plate. He struck out the Chicago designated hitter, getting Thome to watch a curveball for strike three.

"I had a better feel for the curveball tonight," Bonser said.

"He's been pretty consistent all year," catcher Mike Redmondsaid. "He's gone out there and given us some quality innings. There have been three or four starts I can think of that wedidn't score any runs for him. It's nice to score some runs.He deserved that."

Bonser had plenty of help, as the Twins scored at least eightruns for the third time in their last four games.

Castillo hit a two-out single to start a fifth-inning rally andeventually scored on a wild pitch before Morneau hit a two-rundouble to cap the inning. Chicago scored the game's final runin the seventh when Jermaine Dye induced a two-out bases-loadedwalk to chase Bonser.

Minnesota finished with 16 hits, its most since amassing aseason-high 22 against Detroit on May 13.

"Its just the cycle we're going through right now," Cuddyersaid. "You go through your good times and bad times. Right nowis a good time for us. We're playing the kind of baseball we'reaccustomed to playing."

For the White Sox, it was their worst loss since falling 8-1 tothe New York Yankees in the second game of a doubleheader on May16.

"Since we've been here we haven't hit or pitched," Chicagomanager Ozzie Guillen said. "We've played real poorly. They'vedone the opposite. They've hit well. They are outplaying usright now."

"That's the first time since he's been here he's thrown the ballthat poorly," Guillen said. "But its something you have to getup and get it better next time. You have to be strong enough toovercome those problems."
