In all honesty, is there any way that ARod won't win the MVP? He's having the best offensive season we've seen out of anyone in quite some time, maybe even since he hit 57 home runs back a few years ago. This year, he's hitting .318, with 52 homers and 140 RBI. Beyond that, he's got 22 stolen bases in 25 attempts. He's also has a .672 slugging percentage, has an OBP of .424, and an OPS of 1.096. Oh by the way, he's also scored 132 runs, which is close to the league lead as well.
Looking beyond statistics though, the fact that his team has been outstanding in the second half is the other reason he has to win. They've been the best team in the second half of the season, a big reason is because he's played great baseball. Not only that, but he's also been able to carry the offense through their god awful inconsistencies this year as well.
Lastly, the other top candidate, at least in my opinion, is Maggs Ordonez. He's having a great season, the only issue with him is actually his team first, and second, the fact that ARod has been better. After having a good first half, the Tigers have fallen apart. It's not his fault though, mainly his pitching staffs. They haven't been very healthy, and when they have been, they've been inconsistent. The second reason, the ARod thing, is the big reason though. As good as Maggs has been, ARod has been better. Just look at the stats. ARod has him beat in every category outside of BA. He's scored more runs, hit more homers, drove in more runs, stolen more bases, etc. He's just had too good of a season to not give him the MVP.
Now, if the Tigers were in the WC lead and the Yanks were on the outside looking in, my opinion would likely differ. But since the Yanks are in at the moment and the Tigers are out, ARod has to be the MVP.
What does everyone else here think?

Arod actually leads the AL in runs by 20, and is leading all of MLB in... Runs, Homers, RBIs, OPS. Playing 3rd and with how he played through the year as you said (Carrying the Yankees early, and contibuting to their current success), he's flat out the MVP. Great year for him to cash out.
Even if theh Tigers were leading the WC, ARod would still be the front runner.
-Petey

This morning I recall seeing that his OBP was over .600 in clutch situations, whereas Maggs was .444.
Taking that into account, I would still give A-Rod the MVP even without the WC lead.

Because of the expectations on the Yankees, if they blow their lead and don't make the playoffs, then I don't see A-Rod winning the MVP. This isn't like when he was in Texas and nobody expect the team to win.
In Baseball, like the in NBA the MVP voters get too wrapped up by team record

Honestly, I don't see the Yanks blowing this lead. They won again tonight for the 6th straight time, and while they continue to win, the Tigers and M's have each struggled mightily recently. Honestly, I'm still hoping for a division title, and if we can sweep the BoSox again in this upcoming series, I think we might be able to make a serious late season run. Regardless of that though, I'm happy as long as we make the playoffs, we just better do more than another first round exit.
