NEW ORLEANS -- Free agent forward/center Melvin Ely has reached an agreement with the Hornets on a contract, an NBA source Wednesday told The Associated Press.

The source confirmed the signing but did not want to be identified before Thursday's formal announcement was made.

Ely, 29, 6-10, 260 pounds, is a fifth-year veteran traded by the Charlotte Bobcats to the San Antonio Spurs in February. He played in six games for the Spurs but was inactive for the playoffs. The Spurs won their third NBA championship in June against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

I hope his underperforming nature doesn't rub off on Armstrong and Simmons

This is a good move for adding depth and athleticism but not much else

Man if you could combine Armstrong and Simmons' skillsets you'd have one hell of a player.

ya...depending on how ely acts in new orleans, this could turn out to be really, really good or ugly.

They moved quick on this signing. I just posted an article yesterday saying the Hornets were looking for a backup center to push Simmons and Hilton in the rotation, and bam they sign Melvin Ely. I think this was the perfect signing for what the Hornets were trying to accomplish. Byron Scott has a good track record for getting produciton out of lanky forwards.
