i was wondering if you'd ever thought about adding a shoutbox or something to the site, we used to have one on DYC... makes for good banter and will probably help the newer members get to know eachother.
what do you think?

I second this. As Denny knows i've been asking for one(or More) since We(DYC) Got here
A shoutbox is just like an Instant Messenger E.g. Aim or MSn for everyone to talk.

QUOTE (shapecity)

how does it work exactly?
like max said, its like an instant messenger but built into the website.

It's not an instant messenger, as much as something like group chat mode in messenger.
Anyone on the page with the shoutbox can type in a string and everyone else sees that added to the shoutbox.
A mod has to watch the shoutbox constantly or there'll be "get your viagra" kinds of thing on it.
How many of these are we going to have? one per team? That'd be a lot of them that need to be monitored.

something like this would be great for talking online during a live game. you could have a mod set one up for their forum and have members chime in to discuss the game.

I'm pretty sure we would use "Aim" chat in the shoutbox, do you really want to see this posted in an actual thread, "were gona winn da game, becuz of defense"?

I see no point to the shoutbox anyway. We have the RTT, and if it's not satisfying enough, we all have instant messengers. Using that, we can have chatroom discussions, or individual chats like always.
How about 1 on the Homepage. and one in each big section e.g. 1 in the NFL, one in NBA, 1 in football etc
We're going to do something like shoutbox, but S2 style. Something like a thread that's a chat.
More as it gets closer to being ready.

You can open it in a separate window like an AIM group chat.
But it saves the transcript in something like a thread.

No timetable yet. We think it's a neat idea, we have the pattern to build it, but there's a lot of things that people ask for that delay the things we want to do.
I will say this is on the short list of things we really want to do, and it's only a 2 or 3 day job.
