Pineiro helps Cards snap nine-game losing streak

ST LOUIS 4, CHICAGO 3 (2ND GAME)
By Jim Walsh
    PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Joel Pineiro recovered from a shaky startand the St. Louis Cardinals made a four-run third inning standup in defeating the Chicago Cubs, 4-3 to gain a split in aday-night doubleheader and snap a nine-game losing streak.

The defending World Champion Cardinals kept their slim playoffhopes alive, pulling back to six games behind the CentralDivision-leading Cubs with 15 games left.

The Cubs (77-72) lost for the first time in five games and holda one game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers (75-72), who defeatedCincinnati.

Pineiro (6-4) was coming off his worst start since beingacquired by the Cardinals at the trade deadline, giving up sixruns in 3 1/3 innings against the Cubs at Wrigley on Monday. Itlooked like it would be a repeat performance as Chicago gainedthe early advantage, getting to Pineiro for three runs in thefirst two frames, but some sharp defense prevented things fromdegenerating further.

A single by Aramis Ramirez scored Jacque Jones in the first, advancing Derrek Lee to third with one out. Pineiro walkedCliff Floyd to load the bases and Mark DeRosa lined a ball tocenter fielder Jim Edmonds, who gunned down Lee trying to scorefor an inning-ending double play.

It looked like Pineiro might avoid further damage in the secondwhen Cardinals left fielder Ryan Ludwick threw home to nab RyanTheriot attempting to score from second on Cubs starter SeanMarshall's single. But the escape was temporary as momentslater Soriano connected for his second two-run home run of theday and it looked like the Cubs might have an easy game.

However the Cardinals came back with the aid of some poor Cubsdefense and took the lead in the third, scoring four runs, andputting an end to Marshall's day.

Marshall (7-8) retired Albert Pujols on a groundout to start theinning and appeared to have struck out Ludwick, but catcherJason Kendall dropped the third strike and Ludwick was safe atfirst as Kendall's throw pulled Lee off the bag. The Cardinalstook advantage as Edmonds drew a walk, Yadier Molina connectedfor a two-run double and Scott Spiezio drove home Molina with asingle.

Two batters latter, Michael Wuertz relieved Marshall and wasgreeted with a two-out triple to center off the bat of MiguelCairo to give the Cardinals a one run lead. Marshall wascharged with all four runs - two earned - with six hits, twowalks, and three strikeouts.

Pineiro made a turnaround of his own, retiring 15 batters in arow after Lee's leadoff double in the third. The 32-year oldrighthander finished the night allowing only the three runs withseven hits, one walk, and four strikeouts over his seveninnings.

Russ Springer pitched a scoreless eighth and Jason Isringhausencame on the ninth to record his 29th save.

It looked like Pineiro might avoid further damage in the secondwhen Cardinals left fielder So Taguchi threw home to nab RyanTheriot attempting to score from second on Cubs starter SeanMarshall's single.

"I probably wouldn't be in the ball game if those two guys hadscored," said Pineiro, who improved to 3-0 in four starts athome. "I told myself, I didn't prepare myself to go three orfour innings so I've got to trust in my stuff."

But the escape was temporary as moments later Soriano connectedfor his second two-run home run of the day and it looked likethe Cubs might have an easy game.

However the Cardinals came back with the aid of some poor Cubsdefense and took the lead in the third, scoring four runs, andputting an end to Marshall's day.

Marshall (7-8) retired Albert Pujols on a groundout to start theinning and appeared to have struck out Ryan Ludwick, butcatcher Jason Kendall dropped the third strike and Ludwick wassafe at first as Kendall's throw pulled Lee off the bag. TheCardinals took advantage as Edmonds drew a walk, Yadier Molinaconnected for a two-run double and Scott Spiezio drove homeMolina with a single.

"The bottom line is, I didn't make that throw," Kendall said."It changed the momentum and they won. I went to throw it and Ihad to step over the bat, I should have taken my time to makethe throw, it's a play 999 times out of a thousand."
