The Devil Rays hammered Mariners pitchers for 15 hits, includingfive doubles and Pena's 40th home run, to earn a series splitat Safeco Field.

"None of us thought he (Pena) would do that at the start of theyear," Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "We thought he wouldhit well and hit with power, but not to the extent that he has."

Young had two hits, driving in a pair in the seventh and twomore in the eighth to run his RBI total to 87 on the season.

The 22-year-old right fielder is thrusting himself into thediscussion for American League Rookie of the Year with 16 RBI sofar this month.

Sonnanstine lasted seven innings, yielding one run and six hitswhile walking two and striking out eight, as Tampa Bay handedthe faltering Mariners their 17th loss in their last 22 games.

"Sonnie (Sonnanstine) really came through today," Maddon said."We played a much better baseball game today and I reallyenjoyed that. But Sonnie set the tone for us today."

Sonnanstine gave credit to the three previous Tampa Baystarters, each of whom pitched very well in the first threegames of the series.

"I feed off these guys," he said. "When they have a good start,I want to go out and have an even better start."

Jarrod Washburn (6-15), who fell to 1-9 in his last 13 starts, lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and three runs whilewalking three and striking out six. His lifetime mark againstthe Devil Rays fell to 10-3 as he suffered his fifth consecutiveloss.

"The whole infield came out to the mound and everybody was realpositive and kept telling me I was going to get out of it,"Sonnanstine said. "So, it pretty much made me believe I was."

Young's two run double and Harris' run-scoring single in theseventh inning gave the Devil Rays a 7-1 advantage and put thegame away for the visitors.

"It's an uphill battle for sure and we need a lot of help," saidMariners manager John McLaren assessing his team's rapidlyfading chances of earning the American League wild card berth. The loss dropped Seattle six games behind the New York Yankeesfor the playoff spot.

"We need a lot of help and we need to help ourselves," McLarensaid. "My main thought is to finish strong. Just finish strongand see what happens."

The only negative note for the Devil Rays came when Crawfordsuffered a strained left groin. He will be evaluated and waslisted as day-to-day.
