You can trade off fast disks for big disks, and that kind of thing.</p> The monitor is the key thing for me.</p> </p>

Also, laptops are nice for what they are used for, but if you don't need one, go for a desktop, easier to work with.</p>

I'm not up to date on the shared memory technologies, but generally in the past they've been quite slow for performance. Basically for running apps, but not games.</p> Like I said, the monitor is the biggie for me. I care about vertical resolution... something like 1280x1024 is way too low for me - I want to stretch my browser tall as I can and my program editor and paint program etc. Plus you can throw away the old computer anytime and still use the monitor on the next computer.</p> I'm not a fan of all the pre-installed software you get on a machine like that... The ethernet is only 100mbit (I use gigE for everything but wireless). The CPUs are ok for a laptop, not super fast for a desktop - probably good enough for web surfing no doubt. 2G is the minimum I'd put in a machine. The hard disk is a very nice size. Vista isn't getting the best reviews.</p> So mixed. </p> I would consider putting linux on it though </p> </p> </p>

Dell's off the shelve computers with similar specs are a $1000+ and I built a computer comparable to the one I am looking at and Dell.comand it was $2300 dollars.</p> </p>

Sager used to sell some nice laptop systems at a reasonable price. My brother had one years ago that lasted through his abuse (he dropped his laptop even more than I dropped mine).
I bought a laptop. A Gateway MT3422 at Best Buy (those people are idiots BTW) for $549 dollars. After I bought it I I upgraded the RAM and did some tweaking, now the thing is lighting fast.</p>
I am not sure about WEI but my scores before the RAM upgrade and tweaks where 4.6, 4.8, 2.6, 2.4, and 4.8. Now they are 4.6, 5.8, 3.2, 3.0, and 4.9. I looked at some other, more expensive laptops and they are, at the very least, comparable.</p>
