Mussina on game again as Yanks top Blue Jays

NY YANKEES 7, TORONTO 5
By Larry Fleisher
    PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- With the exception of one inning,Mike Mussina's other six frames closely resembled his previoustwo starts.

Mussina pitched seven innings for his third straight win and hadhelp from the bottom of the lineup as the New York Yankeesrecorded a 7-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sundayafternoon.

The Yankees (90-65) won for the 14th time in 17 games, closingwith 1 1/2 games of the Boston Red Sox (92-64) and remained fivegames in front of the Detroit Tigers for the wild card. Theyalso reduced their magic number to clinching a 13th postseasonspot to two.

After playing five hours and using a franchise-record 10pitchers in Saturday's 12-11 win, the Yankees were hopingMussina (11-10) could prevent them from more extensive use ofthe bullpen. He did exactly that and grew stronger as the gamewent on.

Mussina allowed three runs - all in the second inning - and fourof his seven hits in that inning. After falling behind bythree, he allowed just four baserunners and retired the lastnine hitters he faced.

Mussina struck out five, issued one walk and threw 66 of 97pitches for strikes.

Luis Vizcaino gave up a two-run homer to Matt Stairs with twoouts in the eighth, a base hit to Aaron Hill and walked GregZaun before being replaced by rookie Joba Chamberlain.

Chamberlain, who pitched two innings in the series opener, struck out Lind to preserve the 7-5 lead. The righthander, whocelebrated his 22nd birthday on Sunday, also worked the ninthfor his first career save.

Mussina went 0-3 from August 16 to August 27 and during thatstretch he was tagged for 20 runs and 25 hits in 9 2/3 innings. That led to the 17-year veteran being demoted to the bullpen forthe first time in his career.

However, Roger Clemens' elbow ailment allowed Mussina to returnto the rotation, and the 38-year-old has made the most of hissecond chance.

In his previous two starts, he threw 12 1/3 scoreless innings, including an outing on Tuesday against the Baltimore Orioleswhen he allowed three hits in seven innings and manager JoeTorre said it just looked like he was able to do what he wantedto do.

It did not quite look that way early as Mussina allowed atwo-run double to Adam Lind with one out in the second and anRBI single to Curtis Thigpen that put Toronto ahead 3-0.

But the Yankees rallied in the bottom of the inning off DustinMcGowan (11-10) as Jose Molina, Johnny Damon and Derek Jetercame through with RBI singles.

The game stayed tied until the fifth when Robinson Cano had arun-scoring hit that chased McGowan. The Yankees added two moreruns off Brian Tallet as Doug Mientkiewicz and Molina had RBIhits.

Molina had three hits, adding an RBI double in the seventh offJosh Banks.

McGowan, who pitched a five-hitter Monday against Boston, lastedjust 4 1/3 innings and allowed six runs and six hits. He alsoissued a season-worst six walks and threw 112 pitches.

Mussina on game again as Yanks top Blue Jays

NY YANKEES 7, TORONTO 5
By Larry Fleisher
    PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer

BRONX, New York (Ticker) - While the revival of Mike Mussinacontinued, there may also be an alteration to the "Joba Rules".

Mussina pitched seven innings for his 250th career victory andJoba Chamberlain celebrated his 22nd birthday with his firstcareer save as the New York Yankees inched closer to their 13thstraight postseason berth with a 7-5 victory over the TorontoBlue Jays.

The Yankees (90-65) won for the 14th time in 17 games, closingwithin 1 1/2 games of the Boston Red Sox (92-64) and remainingfive games in front of the Detroit Tigers for the wild card. They also reduced their magic number to clinch a playoff spot totwo, which means they can qualify by beating Toronto Mondayafternoon and having Minnesota defeat Detroit at night.

Mussina won his third straight start since his return to therotation, which was caused by Roger Clemens' recent elbowinjuries. With the exception of a three-run second inning, hewas sharp, allowing three runs and seven hits.

"I think the most encouraging sign for me and stopped it rightthere," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "Early on, when he hadthose three bad starts he had some bad experiences early in thegame and didn't recover from it."

He struck out five, walked one and threw 66 of 97 pitches forstrikes to become the 43rd pitcher to reach 250 wins, somethingthat might not have seemed possible a few weeks ago when hestruggled through three awful outings.

"It's a nice number," Mussina said. "It's better than 249. It'snice to be given a chance to go out there for that long aperiod of time and a chance to win 250 games and to play withsome of the talent and with some of the teams I've had a chanceto do it, it's been a lot of fun. It's been great and hopefullybefore I'm done I can go out there and win some more."

Since returning from his first career stint in the bullpen,Mussina had thrown 12 1/3 scoreless frames, including Tuesday'souting against Baltimore when he scattered three hits in seveninnings, prompting Torre to say that it looked like he was ableto do whatever he wanted to out there.

It was not quite that way Sunday as Mussina needed some helpfrom his defense. Center fielder Melky Cabrera recorded hismajor league-leading 16th outfield assist in the fourth andcatcher Jose Molina picked off Alex Rios an inning earlier.

After those defensive gems, Mussina retired the final ninehitters and the Yankees turned things over to the bullpen, whichused nine pitchers in Saturday's 12-11 five-hour win.

"The last couple of innings I felt pretty good about what Icould do and felt that most pitches I was choosing, where I waschoosing and throwing was the right thing to do. When you havethat level of trust in your stuff or that level of confidence, usually things are going well. Today after the second inning, things went pretty well."

Luis Vizcaino was did not pitch Saturday and he recorded thefirst two outs before allowing a two-run home run to Matt Stairsthat created a save situation and prompted Chamberlain to beginwarming up. Vizcaino gave up a single to Aaron Hill, walkedGreg Zaun and Chamberlain entered to face the potential go-aheadrun.

Chamberlain pitched two innings in Friday's 14-inning loss andnormally would not have been available until Monday. But therules for him have been evolving and when Torre consulted withminor league pitching instructor Nardi Contreras and generalmanager Brian Cashman, they decided to alter them and give himthe chance to record a save.

"We're on the move with this thing," Torre said. "A lot of it'sgoing to be judged on pitched count. Certain situations have tobe right for us in a position to use him and unfortunately itcalled for that in the eighth inning."

"I didn't have any idea," Chamberlain said. "He told me to startplaying catch and to get hot. You kind of watch and see andkind of dictate what's going to happen. It was good. You getthat adrenaline going, but make sure you're ready."

Pitching in the middle of an inning for the second time in hisbrief career, Chamberlain struck out Adam Lind on five straightsliders and when the Yankees did not score in the bottom half,he filled in for Mariano Rivera, who threw 34 pitches Wednesdayand pitched in the previous two games.

"I thought it was the least I could do for them considering thethings they've done for me," Chamberlain said.

"Great," catcher Jose Molina said. "It's amazing what he'sdone."

Chamberlain threw 11 more pitches in the ninth and struck outthe final two hitters and said he planned on giving the ball tohis father Harlan, who made the trip from Nebraska.

"He grew a little more today," Torre said. "The ninth inningwas 1-2-3. It's a tough ballclub, they've been tough for us.But that was probably the toughest test for him."

"He's a key guy for them," Toronto manager John Gibbons said."Chamberlain came in - he was the difference."

Early it did not look that Mussina would continue his comebackas he allowed a two-run double to Adam Lind with one out in thesecond and an RBI single to Curtis Thigpen that put him in a 3-0hole.

That deficit quickly evaporated as the Yankees produced threeruns with two outs on RBI singles from Jose Molina, Johnny Damonand Derek Jeter.

Molina also helped the game stayed tied in the next two inningsas he made a quick snap throw to first baseman Doug Mientkiewiczthat and caught Cabrera's relay throw and convinced plateumpire Derryl Cousins that he tagged Zaun.

"I don't think he tagged me and I know I touched home plate,"Zaun said. "Derryl thought he did tag me. He didn't touch me onthe helmet. I know that."

"I didn't have command of anything," McGowan said. "I had to goto my second pitch and I couldn't go to the curveball today. Ifell behind and walks - they hurt me."
