<h3>Beckett, Red Sox hope to stop slide, face Devil Rays</h3>

    <div class="pre">Boston (90-63) at Tampa Bay (63-90) 7:10 pm EDT</div>

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - Josh Beckett looks to reach ameaningful number and in the process help his faltering team.

Beckett and the Boston Red Sox look to halt a four-game losingstreak when they open a three-game series with the lowly TampaBay Devil Rays on Friday.

After a 6-1 loss at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays onWednesday, Boston saw its lead in the American League East cutto 1 1/2 games over the New York Yankees, who have won fourstraight. The Red Sox's lead had been seven on September 4.

To stop the slide, Beckett (19-6, 3.20 ERA) takes the balllooking to become the first 20-game winner in the major leagues.

The 27-year-old righthander won his third straight start byoutdueling fellow AL Cy Young Award contender Chien-Ming Wang ina 10-1 win over the Yankees on Saturday.

Since dropping his final two starts in July, Beckett is 6-1 witha 2.70 ERA in eight outings, posting 57 strikeouts in 56 2/3innings. The 2007 All-Star, who is also 10-2 with a 2.23 ERA in12 road starts, has a .500 record (2-2) in four career startsvs. Tampa Bay.

The Devil Rays, who have lost three straight games and seven ofnine, send out Scott Kazmir (13-8, 3.54), who looks to match acareer high with his fifth consecutive win.

The fireballing lefthander, who ranks second in the AL with 220strikeouts, blew away 10 Boston hitters in a 1-0 victory onSeptember 10. Since the All-Star break, Kazmir is 8-2 whilefanning a major-league leading 105 batters.

The 23-year-old is also 6-4 with a 2.62 ERA in 16 starts vs. theRed Sox, including 2-1 in seven outings at Tropicana Field.

Tampa Bay owns the worst record in baseball, two games worsethan division rival Baltimore.

<h3>Matsuzaka to take mound when Red Sox face Devil Rays</h3>

    <div class="pre">Boston (91-63) at Tampa Bay (63-91) 7:10 pm EDT</div>

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - The Boston Red Sox broke outof their slump with a victory on Friday. They will look to stayon the winning track when they visit the Tampa Bay Devil Raysin the second game of a three-game series on Saturday.

The Red Sox had dropped four games in a row and five of six towatch their once commanding lead in the American League EastDivision shring to just 1 1/2 games over the New York Yankees(88-65) coming into the series against the Devil Rays.

But Friday's win coincided with a Yankees' loss to the TorontoBlue Jays, pushing the advantage back to 2 1/2 games with eightcontests remaining.

Boston, which had managed a total of eight runs in their fourstraight losses, broke out on Friday in the 8-1 win, gettinghomers from David Ortiz, Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek.

Daisuke Matsuzaka (14-12, 4.41 ERA) will head to the moundtrying to make it two in a row for the Red Sox. The Japaneserighthander went through a five-start stretch in which hecompiled a 1-4 record with a 9.57 ERA, but came back with astrong outing on September 14 against the Yankees - holding themto two runs in 5 2/3 frames.

Matsuzaka, who is used to a 135-game season and six-manrotations in Japan, was given seven days off before Saturday'sstart in the hope that he will stay fresh for the playoffs.

The Devil Rays will counter with rookie Andy Sonnanstine (6-9,5.68). The 24-year-old righthander has gotten knocked around byBoston twice in the last 30 days, going 0-2 while allowing 12runs in 8 1/3 combined innings.

<h3>Wakefield goes for 20th career win against Devil Rays</h3>

    <div class="pre">Boston (92-63) at Tampa Bay (63-92) 1:40 pm EDT</div>

<div class="pre">ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - With their dreams of a</div>division title hanging in the balance, there is no one theBoston Red Sox would rather send to the mound against the TampaBay Devil Rays than Tim Wakefield.

The veteran knuckleballer will go for his 20th career winagainst the division rivals when the Red Sox visit the DevilRays in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday.

Boston rallied for an 8-6 victory Saturday, clubbing a pair ofninth-inning homers to beat Tampa Bay closer Al Reyes. The win, coupled with the Detroit Tigers (84-71) loss to the Kansas CityRoyals, clinched the Red Sox at least a wild card berth, makingthem the first team this season to lock up a postseason spot.

Wakefield (16-11, 4.73 ERA) owns a 19-2 career mark againstTampa Bay, including a 9-0 record with a 2.16 ERA in 19 games -13 starts - at Tropicana Field. The climate-controlled dometends to allow Wakefield's signature knuckleball to dance just alittle bit more than usual, regularly confounding the DevilRays' hitters.

He has struggled recently, however, going 0-1 with a 12.08 ERAover his last three starts.

Tampa Bay will send Edwin Jackson (4-15, 5.99) to the mound. The24-year-old righthander nearly earned a win against Boston onSeptember 12, leaving after six innings with a lead only towatch slugger David Ortiz club a walk-off homer in the bottom ofthe ninth to wrestle the win away.

Boston could use a strong outing on Sunday, with their lead inthe American League East Division at 2 1/2 games over the NewYork Yankees (89-65) with seven games remaining.
