ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheimwill look to lock up the American League West Division titlewhen they face the Seattle Mariners in the second game of afour-game series on Friday.


The Angels took the series opener by a 9-5 score on Friday,lowering their magic number for the division to one. Themeaningful victory did take a back seat to the fireworks betweenthe teams, as Angels starter Jeff Weaver hit catcher KenjiJohjima with a pitch in the fourth, and Mariners reliever JorgeCampillo retaliated by throwing up-and-in to Jeff Mathis andtwice to Vladimir Guerrero.


Campillo was ejected after throwing at Guerrero the second time,and the benches cleared briefly, leading to some pushing andshoving.


It may have been a case of frustrations boiling over, as theMariners, who were within one game of the division lead onAugust 24, have won just eight of their last 26 games to fall tothe brink of elimination.


Veteran Jarrod Washburn (9-15, 4.53 ERA) will try to helpSeattle stave off elimination for at least one more day when hetakes the mound Friday. The lefthander is just 1-8 over hislast nine outings with a 5.61 ERA.


The Angels will counter with rookie Joe Saunders (8-3, 3.82).The 26-year-old lefthander shut down the Mariners in his lonestart against the division rival, holding them to seven hitsover six scoreless frames on April 20.

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheimget another chance to lock up the American League West Divisiontitle on Saturday when they face the Seattle Mariners in thethird game of a four-game series.


After taking the series opener on Thursday, 9-5, the Angelsfailed to clinch the division on Friday, when former AngelJarrod Washburn led the Mariners to a 6-0 victory.

The magic number is only one for Anaheim, which is also in arace for the best record in the AL with the Cleveland Indians(91-62) and the Boston Red Sox (91-63).


The Angels will send Bartolo Colon (6-7, 6.68 ERA) to the mound,hoping the righthander can show some sort of the form he had in2005, when he won the AL Cy Young award. Colon has not wonsince June 14, and returned from the disabled list on September14. The righthander, who was battling elbow irritation earlierthis season, was scratched from his start on Wednesday with backstiffness.


Colon is 12-9 in 25 career starts against the Mariners, but lostthe only time he faced Seattle this season. Colon gave up nine<div class="pre">runs in 6 1/3 innings on May 28.</div>

Seattle will send Miguel Batista (14-11, 4.51) to the mound. Theveteran righthander is 2-2 against the Angels this year in fourstarts. He pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings against Oakland inhis last start on Monday.

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) - John Lackey is one of a handfulof contenders left for the American League Cy Young Award. Hewill try to pad his resume while leading the Los Angeles Angelsof Anaheim past the Seattle Mariners in the finale of afour-game series on Sunday.


The Angels took the series opener on Thursday to cut their magicnumber for clinching the AL West Division to one, but have hadtrouble closing out the second-place Mariners the past two days,getting shut out 6-0 on Friday and watching the offense sputterto a 3-2 defeat again on Saturday.


Lackey (17-9, 3.13 ERA) is the pitcher Seattle least wants toface when attempting to keep alive its slim postseason hopes. Inthree starts against the Mariners this season, the 28-year-oldrighthander has yet to allow a run.


He has tossed a pair of complete-game shutouts this season, bothagainst Seattle.


Lackey ranks third in the AL in ERA, but will likely need toearn wins in his last two starts this season to make a seriousrun at the Cy Young, with Boston's Josh Beckett reaching the20-win mark on Friday and Cleveland's C.C. Sabathia and FaustoCarmona already with 18 victories apiece.


The Mariners will counter with Jeff Weaver (7-12, 6.21). Theveteran righthander has been terrible of late, going 1-2 with a10.02 ERA over his last five starts.


He has been particularly awful this season against Anaheim,going 0-2 in three starts while surrendering 14 runs in 11 1/3innings.
