Chad (phx): When Nash's contract is up after the 2008 season, do you see the Suns resigning him, or do you see him bolting to Toronto, where he'd be playing in front of Canadian fans and be re-united with Jerry Colangelo?

[IMG]David Thorpe: Great question. But the Suns fans would revolt if he left.

The setting is right for him to finish his career off in Canada. You have a Coangelo Jr. as GM, the Raptors play an uptempo game, and the young talent is proving it can win and challenge in the East.

If Phoenix doesn't win it all this season, they might blow up the team and focus on rebuilding.

Nash to Canada = my wet dream.

I would love that. He is older, but he can still play big minutes. He could teach Ford and Calderon how to be better PG's and help out the team. Please Brain, get Steve Nash!

Brian, not Jerry, is in Toronto. You'd think that at least Thorpe, paid by ESPN, would correct him.

Anyway, I highly doubt that Nash would finish his career with Toronto. I know he maintains a home in/near Tspot, but I think the Suns are going to show him the love that Dallas didn't. He's going to get signed to an extension if he doesn't decide to call his career quits. And I think the Raptors learned from the Dream fiasco that signing a living legend doesn't necessarily equate to more wins. By the time they'd get Nash, his playing abilities will be much diminished from what they are now. Besides that, just because the Raptors are stocking up with European style players doesn't mean they'll be able to run-and-gun they way the Sunds currently do.

Nice fantasy, but just probably won't happen.

Jerry isn't even in Pheonix anymore, IIRC. Didn't he let Sarver buy him out?

Anyways, Chad in Phoenix isn't thinking straight. Nash's contract is up in the summer of 2010, not 2008, supposing the Suns want to pick up the last year of his contract, which seems pretty likely at this point. By that time Nash's back is going to be so fudged that he will probably retire and focus on more humanitarian efforts.

He should go to South Africa. That'd be cool.

Why would he do that? Lol. I think Russia with Hoffa would be cooler.

I think it will be kind of cool if he did go to the Raptors but then again why would the Suns not want to re-sign him.

Well, it's not like his jersey will be retired as a Raptor, so I don't see why he would come here. He is Canadian, but he would only play 1 year, and not even that much.

I would love him in Toronto, but for that to happen, The Suns need to get a much better backup PG.

This would've been a dream scenario for me... two years ago. As much as I love Nash, I'm completely content with our PG situation right now. We could spend that money to address some real needs instead.

Why would he only come to get his jersey retired? Besides, Jordan had his jersey retired by the Heat, and he never even played for them. You could kind of say that he's the Jordan of Canadian basketball, as he's won more awards in the NBA than all other Canadians combined, and has probably done more for the sport than any Canuck other than the Doc.

The idea of Nash playing for the Raps when his contract expires doesn't really excite me. It would have been nice to have him here but to be honest, he's doing more for Canadian basketball playing in the States then he would do in Toronto.

Let me clarify that last part. In Phoenix, he's getting broadcast nationally in front of the largest possible audience. ESPN and TNT aren't interested in showing Raps game w/ or w/o Nash. Besides the guy is already in the country enough, more and more youth are getting the benefit of playing in his national development program (you think there be more if he played in TO? not me). Also most of his games are already on TV, there wasn't many times that I wasn't able the to see Suns games I wanted (I have TSN, all four of the Sportsnets, the Score and RapsTV).

And would really want to subject Steve to the Toronto sports media?

Are you saying you think the Raps should retire Nash's number? It's an interesting idea, I like it.
