Interesting slam, considering the Raiders actually have a better record than the Dolphins do right now.

Interesting logic, philosophy boy, how exactly do the Raiders have a better record than Miami?

Miami is 1 - 6. Oakland is 1 - 5. From a win percentage standpoint, the Dolphins are .143 and the Raiders are .167.

    So....Raiders for the win.

My statement had nothing to do with either teams talent or thier record....it was merely a commentary on how he was healthy but inactive for the 1st 5 games of the season, and thus, running with the scout team in practice....

Let me take a shot at it! Jerry Porter is an over-rated sack of crap. Yes, even as far as sacks of crap are concerned Jerry Porter is over-rated. What has Jerry Porter ever done in the NFL? The whores of media are always talking about his potential which, after SIX years, is still unrealized. If Jerry Porter's potential were any more unrealized, his name would be Freddie Mitchell. That's not a knock against the Raiders. I wish Shell had gotten the four game suspension that he wanted. The only thing I don't understand is why the Raiders have asked for two number one's for Porter, who has never made a single Pro Bowl. I would think a third round pick with a possible condition that it become a number two if he plays well might be the best that they could get for this never-has-been-and-probably-never-will-be.

I agree that he's overrated, but he also had his best season as a pro last year. He and Moss complemented each other well. That's why it's a joke that he's just joining the team now.

Porter should have been playing this whole year. Shell was only hurting the team by putting Porter on the inactive list and in the proverbial "old school" dog house.

What started this problem was that after Al Davis gave a 13 million dollar signing bonus to this reciever, who has never broke a 1,000 yards even in his best season, Porter let Shell know in their first meeting that he wasn't going to work out in their offseason program and he didn't like the direction the team was going. I don't blame Art for trying to break this punk down. Porter isn't even earning the money that he's being paid so how can he even have an opinion about the direction that the team is going? He needs to shut his mouth, listen to Biletnikoff teach him how to earn his money and thank the Raiders for overpaying him in the meantime.

The other point I want to make about Jerry Porter not playing so far this year is that the Raiders went and traded Doug Gabriel to the Patriots. Had they kept Gabriel, I don't think that benching Porter would be such a big deal. But without Porter or Gabriel in there, it's truly (as Warren Sapp said) "Eight guys on defense all covering Randy Moss. The guy needs some help."

So, again, based on his personnel and that the goal of an NFL coach is to win games, putting Porter in the dog house was not a smart move.

^^ Art Shell had to suspend Porter to keep the integrity of the team. If he lets Porter get away with not practicing and running his mouth he would lose his respect as the coach and he wouldn't be able to keep his team under control. He needs to keep the players in-line to have any chance at success.

In the past two Raider victories, Porter has only 1 catch for 19 yards. Granted, today was his first game back, but I'm not sure that having Porter there the whole time would really make a difference in the passing game. The offensive line is giving up several sacks each game, and I don't believe that it has anything to do with guys being open downfield. Robert Gallery and Langston Walker have been allowing outside rushers to walk by them on their way to Walter. Jake Grove tends to get pushed around by some of the better nose tackles, like Seymour. The whole line averages about 2-3 years each in NFL experience. 4 of these guys played in multiple postions on the line for the past 3 years. I can't tell which is hurting them more, the inexperience or the constant shifting. Until Shell finds a solution for his o-line, the passing game is going nowhere.

Shell will get the o-line fixed. He is a top shelf o-line coach in my humble opinion. No coach could have taken over this Raiders team and marched through the season winning every game. Give the guy some time. He will pull this team together. That being said Boo! Hiss! Death to the Raiders!

I am skeptical. It seems like they have tried all the fundamental changes to the line and its just making things worse.

Nobody expected him to win every game. We would be happier if they would score every game... even if it is only on defense. Given time and money I think that Shell can correct the ills of the line, but there is no telling how long the leash or how loose the purse strings will be after another losing season.

Al Davis is impatient and wants to win now not give a coach 3-4 years to correct other mistakes... The players are constantly being shifted on the Oline meaning learn yet another assignment.. the players need to have time to learn everything just like a coach needs time to put it together.. Look what Lovie smith has done for chicago.. we aren't perfect football team but at times can look flawless the raiders can too if al davis was patient

If the team is at or under the salary cap, why not give Shell just two years to figure it out, not 3-4? For Tom Walsh, I think he should be evaluated at the end of this season, and Shell after next season. If the season ended today, I think that Al should fire Walsh and help Shell find a better replacement. I'd even take Norv Turner back if his only responsibility was to run the offense.

I haven't heard anyone give Al credit for making Shell keep Rob Ryan as the team's D-coordinator. Rob Ryan's defense has very few people from any previous Raider teams, and most are very young. The Raiders defense, as you have seen in recent weeks, keeps the team in games, and has won games despite a horrible offense trying hard to give it away.
