Howard helps Phillies keep pace in NL East

PHILADELPHIA 4, WASHINGTON 1 (10 INNINGS)
WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Ryan Howard battled back to help thePhiladelphia Phillies stay in the hunt.

Howard hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 10th inningas the Phillies posted a 4-1 victory over the WashingtonNationals on Saturday night.

Chase Utley scored the winning run and also homered forPhiladelphia, which has won three straight and nine of 10 tostay right in the thick of the National League playoff races.

The Phillies (85-70) stayed 1 1/2 games behind the NLEast-leading New York Mets (86-68), who defeated the FloridaMarlins, 7-2. They also closed to within one game of the SanDiego Padres (85-68) in the wild card race. San Diego plays theColorado Rockies on Saturday.

With the scored knotted at 1-1 in the 10th, Utley led off with asingle off Nationals reliever Chris Schroder (2-3). After PatBurrell walked on four pitches, Howard drilled a base hit up themiddle, plating Utley.

It was redemption for the reigning NL MVP, who had been 0-for-4with four strikeouts.

Jesus Colome entered and his second walk of the frame - with thebases loaded to Jayson Werth - gave Philadelphia a 3-1 edge.Jonathan Albaladejo came into the game, and after striking outChris Coste for the second out, surrendered an RBI single topinch hitter Carlos Ruiz to cap the inning.

Brett Myers (5-7), who pitched a scoreless ninth, got the winand Clay Condrey pitched the 10th for his second save.

Utley started the scoring for the Phillies in the first, when hebelted a one-out, 2-1 pitch from Tim Redding over the rightfield wall.

The Nationals tied the game in the sixth when second basemanUtley's throw to first base in attempt to complete a double playgot past Howard, allowing Ryan Zimmerman to score from second.

The tally came off Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick, who yielded arun - unearned - and six hits, while fanning six in six frames.

Redding was just as effective, allowing eight hits and no walkswith seven strikeouts.

Howard helps Phillies keep pace in NL East

PHILADELPHIA 4, WASHINGTON 1 (10 INNINGS)
WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Ryan Howard was one swing shy ofstriking out five times in a game for the first time in hiscareer and tying Adam Dunn for the most strikeouts in a seasonat 195.

Howard instead delivered an RBI single up the middle thatignited the Philadelphia Phillies to 4-1 victory over theWashington Nationals in 10 innings Saturday night that kepttheir playoff chances thriving.

"That's what baseball's about," Phillies manager Charlie Manuelsaid. "You can be traveling along striking out and all of asudden with one swing you become a hero. That's why you stayafter it and that's why you stay with it. That's what happenswhen you don't give in and keep on trying."

Chase Utley scored the winning run and also homered forPhiladelphia, which has won three straight and nine of 10 tostay right in the thick of the National League playoff races.

"Something's got to go somebody's way if we hang around longenough, hasn't it?" Manuel said. "That was a helluva game. Itended up in our favor, of course, and that's the best part ofit."

The Phillies (85-70) stayed 1 1/2 games behind the NLEast-leading New York Mets (86-68), who defeated the FloridaMarlins, 7-2. They also closed to within one-half game of theSan Diego Padres (85-69) in the wild card race. San Diego lostto the Colorado Rockies.

With the scored knotted at 1-1 in the 10th, Utley led off with asingle off Nationals reliever Chris Schroder (2-3). After PatBurrell walked on four pitches, Howard drilled a base hit up themiddle, plating Utley.

"I was just up there trying to get something to hit, trying tomove Chase over, and I got a fastball and hit it back up themiddle," Howard said. "I was just up there trying to battle."

"I wanted to get it a little higher," Schroder said. "I justleft it more belt-high for him."

It was redemption for the reigning NL MVP, who had been 0-for-4with four strikeouts.

"I felt good," Howard said. "There were just a couple of pitchesI didn't pull the trigger on earlier. It happens like thatsometimes. But you're only as good as your next AB, and I wentup there my last at-bat and tried to be a little moreaggressive.

"Strikeouts are a part of the game. What can you do? But Iwanted to go home."

Righthander Jesus Colome entered for Washington and got AaronRowand to bounce to third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who gunneddown Michael Bourn at the plate for the first out of the inning.

Pinch hitter Shane Victorino followed with an infield singlewhen Colome failed to cover first on a grounder to Nationalsfirst baseman Robert Fick. That loaded the bases for pinchhitter Wes Helms, who drew a walk on four pitches that scoredHoward for a 3-1 lead.

Righthander Jonathan Albaladejo entered and struck out ChrisCoste before allowing an RBI single to Carlos Ruiz that scoredRowand for a 4-1 lead. Victorino also tried to score on theplay and was thrown out at the plate by Nationals left fielderRyan Church to end the inning.

Brett Myers (5-7), who pitched a scoreless ninth, got the winand Clay Condrey pitched the 10th for his second save.
