Royals race to early lead to defeat Tigers

KANSAS CITY 7, DETROIT 4
DETROIT (Ticker) -- The door may have just shut on the DetroitTigers' postseason hopes.

Mike Sweeney, Emil Brown and Mark Grudzielanek all had two RBIas the Kansas City Royals coasted to a 7-4 victory over theTigers on Saturday.

The setback pushed Detroit (84-71) 5 1/2 games behind the NewYork Yankees (89-65) in the American League wild card chase withjust seven games remaining. New York defeated Toronto.

"Everybody else is going to be more dramatic about it than Iam," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "We're trying to win asmany games as we can, trying to give the fans as good a show aswe can. We don't like the situation we're in but that's thesituation we played ourselves into.

"We're going to continue to play hard, we've got seven gamesleft. We're going to give it everything we've got. That's whatwe're supposed to do. It's a little sad that we're probablynot going to go to the postseason."

Detroit starter Kenny Rogers (3-3) yielded a two-run single toBrown during a three-run first frame.

An inning later, Grudzielanek delivered an RBI double beforecoming home on Sweeney's run-scoring single to left to extendthe lead to 5-1.

"Kenny (Rogers) is a great pitcher," Sweeney said. "Our plan wasto get to him early, if you don't he'll just shut you down inthe late innings. We were able to score early and not go tosleep and add more runs later."

Grudzielanek had two hits off Rogers, improving to 11-of-17against the veteran lefthander for his career.

"I just can't explain it," Grudzielanek said. "(Rogers) madesome mistakes and I took advantage of them. I guess some guyshave you and I'm that with him."

Rogers gave up five runs and eight hits through six innings toremain winless in four outings since coming off the disabledlist on September 5.

"For me, you've got to continually make some quality pitches,"Rogers said. "They got a couple runs in that first inning thatcame back to haunt us."

Kansas City starter Kyle Davies (3-6) snapped his personalthree-game skid, allowing three runs and nine hits in 5 1/3frames for the win.

"This was a step forward from my last start," Davies said. "Iwas able to use my curveball to keep the hitter off-balance.The key to was staying ahead of the hitters. It's always niceto get win, but you have to get better and better with everystart."

The Tigers had a chance to rally in the sixth with runners onsecond and third, but reliever John Bale struck out Brandon Ingeand forced Curtis Granderson to ground out to end the threat.

"Somehow you've got to find a way to manufacture runs,"Granderson said. "Find a way to get the guys in that are onacross the board because the runners left on base total ends upbeing a big point that a lot of people don't see. Sure enough,it ends up coming back to bite us again."

Granderson recorded his seventh leadoff homer in the first toset a club record and Magglio Ordonez finished with four hits asDetroit fell to 10-7 in the season series.
