SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres are suddenlyfighting for their playoff lives.

ThePadres, who led the wild card by 2 1/2 games last Wednesday, also trail the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks (88-68) by threegames in the NL West with six games remaining.

"We're not out of the division, Arizona still has to win andwe've got to win some games," Padres manager Bud Black said."We still determine our own fate. For us, the Phillies, theRockies, and the Diamondbacks, it's a six-game season. It'sgreat, it's exciting. I know our guys are excited about it.They know that they're in contention. There's a lot of teamsthat would trade places with us right now."

Young (9-8), who was selected to this year's All-Star game, hadanother tough second-half outing. The righthander surrenderedeight hits and seven runs in five innings and is just 1-5 with a4.97 ERA since the All-Star break.

"Sometimes you don't get the breaks," Young said. "I thoughtthere were some good pitches in there, a ground ball that foundthe hole. One thing that leads to the next and they got five(runs) and that was it. It sounds redundant but I thought Ithrew the ball decent. Its frustrating because its a big game, its a night we needed to win and it didn't go our way."

Omar Vizquel did most of the damage for the Giants with threehits and four RBI.

Barry Zito (10-14) picked up the win despite another mediocreouting. The lefthander, who signed a seven-year, $126 millioncontract in the offseason, pitched five innings, allowing eighthits and four runs to snap a personal two-game losing streak.

"The boys picked me up big-time tonight," Zito said. "I'd getbaserunners on before there were even outs, but I made some goodpitches and got out of some jams. Keeping the big inning awayfrom them was less scoring runs than momentum-wise. Let themkeep scratching but it never changed the momentum."

Zito will finish with the first losing season of his career, but<div class="pre">he did reach double-digits in wins for the seventh straight</div>year.

"He struggled with his command and I could tell he wasn't on topof his game," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "But he kepthis composure and not letting the game get away from us. Theplan right now is for Barry to get one more (start). Theconsistency he has shown over the years, I'm sure he wants thatone more."

The Padres scored singled runs in the first two innings on anRBI single by Kevin Kouzmanoff and a groundout by Brian Gilesfor a 2-0 lead.

The Giants answered back with two runs in the bottom half of thesecond on an RBI triple by Vizquel and a single by Zito.

San Francisco broke it open in the third with a two-run singleby Vizquel capping the frame.

Barry Bonds, who is day-to-day with a sprained big toe heinjured on September 15 at San Diego, sat out for the ninthstraight game. The Giants, who have decided not to re-signBonds to another contract, have plans to honor hisaccomplishments in the final home game on Wednesday night.

"He's doing better so I'll talk to him again tomorrow," Bochysaid. "We'll see when we can get him out there. He swung thebat well today so he's real close. I want to give him one moreday and we'll see where he's at. He may be able to pinch hittomorrow."
