QUOTE

Woodson spoke with Hawks beat writer Sekou Smith about that and a lot more in a recent phone interview.
Q: People always talk about what players do over the summer to improve from one year to the next, but what about the coaches? How much time do you guys spend evaluating what you've done and what you can do better in time for training camp of the next season?
A: It's mainly during summer league that we get a chance to experiment with new things and really evaluate what happened last season as a coaching staff. Honestly, it was really hard to evaluate over a full period of time because we had so many lineup changes and guys in and out of uniform, so all you can do is judge on a majority of games where guys were there and take some footage from games we played well and build on that. You also take stuff from the games we didn't play well and study it and see how we can get better. The other thing is you try to be hands-on with the players through the summer and make sure they're on their [workout] program.
Q: You beat playoff darling Golden State twice last season playing at their preferred, frantic pace and also won at Phoenix, Denver, Cleveland, Toronto and L.A. [Clippers] pushing the pace. Will you go into this season trying to push the pace again, knowing that this team played some of its best basketball when it played that style?
A: To be successful this year, we're going to have to mix it up and play at a faster pace, without a doubt. We still have to defend and rebound. And I'm not taking away from what Golden State accomplished, because they were fun to watch, but it's the teams that defend and rebound that ultimately win titles. But to answer your question, yes, I am going to emphasize shooting [3-pointers] and getting the ball out of the basket and getting it up the floor. We need to make it a more up-tempo game for our guys because it plays to our strengths. But the bottom line is you're still going to have to make shots. You've got to put the ball in the hole. And if you're not making shots you've got to make sure the other team is not running the score up on you. It works both ways. The fun part is we were more exciting when we run.

 AJC.com
