Miro the hat-trick hero as Reds run amok
Miroslav Klose struck three times as Bayern joined in the Oktoberfest revelry with a sparkling second half display to earn a fully merited victory over outclassed bottom club Cottbus. In the first half, the league leaders and the team rooted to the foot of the table stuck closely to their respective roles, as the 69,000 capacity crowd at the Allianz Arena saw the home side subject the visitors’ goal to a heavy and sustained battering. But for all their menace, the Reds were guilty of gilding the lily at times and failed to engineer a way past eccentric Energie keeper Tomislav Piplica. Blistering second half That all changed in a blistering ten-minute spell after the hour when Klose, Martin Demichelis and Luca Toni hammered home to give the scoreline a far more realistic look. A rousing cheer greeted 17-year-old Toni Kroos on his top flight debut, and the highly-rated prodigy immediately set up Klose to complete his brace, before the youngster repeated the favour a minute from time as the established Germany man took his total for the campaign to eight. Bayern's biggest win since moving to the Allianz Arena two seasons ago sees the Bavarians extend their lead in the Bundesliga to three points over new second-placed club Bayer Leverkusen, who entertain the men from Munich on Saturday in a potentially cracking top-of-the-table clash. First start for Daniel Ottmar Hitzfeld made two changes to the line-up from Sunday’s 4-1 win in Karlsruhe. Ze Roberto resumed in defensive midfield at Andreas Ottl’s expense, and there was a first start of term for Daniel van Buyten, with Lucio awarded a breather on the bench. After referee Michael Weiner whistled the match underway, Cottbus contributed a threatening run from China star Jiayi Shao and an Erwin Skela drive to the lively opening exchanges, but it was one-way traffic after that as the leaders mounted an unrelenting barrage on Piplica’s goal. Glaring misses The men in red created chances at the rate of one every 90 seconds as no fewer than nine Bayern players fired at the target at least once with head or boot – indeed, the only Munich stars not to have a pop at goal in the first period were right-back Christian Lell and keeper Oliver Kahn. Piplica’s wayward kicking kept the crowd thoroughly entertained for a time as the notoriously calamity-prone keeper suffered a trademark attack of the nerves, and a ham-fisted punch from Ribery’s free-kick on the half-hour might even have drawn a groan in the Under-11s. However, the shot-stopper showed the other side of his character with a brave block to deny Van Bommel as the Dutchman shaped to convert arguably the best chance of the half, although normally dependable strikers Toni and Klose will also be disappointed at a handful of glaring misses each. Double whammy Timo Rost, the only German in the Cottbus line-up, and Stanislav Angelov prompted saves from Kahn as the visitors went in search of a shock result after the restart, but Bayern soon re-asserted the old order and pressed forward. Franck Ribery was distraught when the match official ruled out a seemingly perfect free-kick goal, although Mr Weiner had made the award for obstruction and clearly indicated an indirect free-kick beforehand. The Reds did not have to wait long for the opener when Klose knocked in his sixth of the season after Piplica reverted to type and spilled Ribery’s 59th minute cross. The Frenchman had been released down the flank by a superb Demichelis pass, and the Argentine was duly on hand to complete a double whammy four minutes later after Van Buyten controlled Ze’s lay-off. Mighty Miro Toni made it three from close range on 69 minutes after Klose’s unselfish lay-off, and Ze smacked a curler against the crossbar as the Reds threatened to run riot, before a mighty cheer greeted the introduction of Kroos, hailed as the most promising talent of his generation at the age of just 17. The young prodigy was soon chalking up his first assist in the Bundesliga with the lofted cross from which Klose made the score 4-0, taking his personal tally to seven this term with fifteen minutes remaining. The pair were at it again a minute from time as the Germany striker completed his hat-trick from another Kroos cross, rounding off a storming victory for the league’s top club. Hitzfeld: Toni, Ribéry and Klose were pure class
Following Bayern’s ultimately crushing victory over bottom club Cottbus, coach Ottmar Hitzfeld pointed out that his men had played well in the first half but failed to find their range in front of goal. “The opener released the tension,” the boss analysed, “and we passed the ball a lot more smoothly after that.” Reaction to Bayern v Energie Cottbus: Ottmar Hitzfeld: “The first half wasn’t as bad as it might appear from the scoreline, but we were wayward in front of goal, we tried too hard to batter them into submission. The second half started a lot better. The opener after the goalkeeper’s mistake released the tension, we passed the ball a lot more smoothly after that. Toni, Ribéry and Klose showed all their class. I was pleased at the chance to give a couple of players a rest after that, and I’m delighted Toni Kroos has made his debut and provided two assists. Our opponents had to throw caution to the wind after going behind, and that obviously benefits the strikers.” Miroslav Klose: “We were guilty of not making better use of our chances in the first half. The coach told us to be patient. Ribéry’s disallowed free-kick goal got us moving as a team.“ Heiko Weber (Cottbus coach): “The first half was acceptable, but we went behind to a stupid goal. But you shouldn’t just throw away everything you’ve worked so hard for. The way we played in the second half won’t do in the battle against relegation. We’ve done ourselves no favours for the match against Frankfurt on Sunday.“ Timo Rost (Cottbus captain): “We stood up to them very well until the 60th minute, but after falling behind we just fell apart yet again. We’ve got to keep it tight in defence after conceding cut out the individual errors. It wasn’t the coach’s fault that we lost today.“
