First, sorry for the late post of this article as I'm new to this board.
Even though Pedro is great on defense (near Gold Glove caliber, rifle arm), I rather try to get someone who's better on BOTH offense and defense like Mike Lowell. What's troubling is Bochy wants him back according to this article.
I'm just sick of yjr Giants spending money on mediocre vets if not over the hill vets. In 2008, there are some great free agents IMHO.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?...4/SPA7SCR3I.DTL

I'd rather have Feliz than Lowell. Lowell does nothing to help the Giants as he is too old. I'd rather keep Feliz around and go after a first baseman (or third baseman) than let Feliz go and have to get both positions. Feliz would be a lot more cost effective than bringing in Lowell.
Welcome to the board, we need more SF Giants here!

Hi Charles. Thanks. I hope this board gets more members, too .
I think Lowell's going to be 34 next season compared to Feliz at 33. That's not too old and not much difference (barring we sign them for not too many years; am okay with giving them more money for less years). The bigger difference is in offensive production where free swinging Pedro hurts us and has frustrated me for years!!! We'll have to see how they end up in regards to salary because both will be free agents.

Player From To Yrs G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG SB CS OPS+
Lowell career:

Mike Lowell 1998-2007 10 1293 4720 632 1319 324 6 183 774 454 659 .279 .344 .467 26 11 111
Pedro career:

Pedro Feliz 2000-2007 8 871 2826 345 710 148 19 109 417 149 499 .251 .288 .433 12 10 85
I think Lowell is a possible FA to go after. There will be others in 2008 which I think will be better than 2007 especially if A-Rod is available. I was kinda shocked at how much money the Giants threw out there for 2007 when the players available weren't that good. Giving big money for multi-years to mediocre guys like Dave Roberts, Ray Durham, Randy Winn (he has been okay this year) have killed us. I'm giving Barry Zito a chance, so won't put him in that category just yet.

Lowell is too much like the guys you mentioned that they signed the last few offseasons. He's a veteran, he doesn't have that much time left. He had a great year this year, but the year before he didn't play all that great and a lot of people were saying he was done. Feliz can play both first and third and will cost a lot less.
Even if the Giants were to offer him a decent contract, do you think he would have any interest in joining the team?

I wouldn't honestly want Lowell or Feliz. Lowell is on the way down, and Feliz is going to give you the exact same year (twenty homers, good but streaky defense, maddeningly poor plate discipline, bad OBP) he does every year. I'd rather plug in an unknown rookie and let him play his way through. I just want this stagnation with the Giants to end. Something, anything new and young and interesting.

While I agree with you that they need to get younger, there isn't exactly a David Wright waiting in the wings to play third base (or any other position, for that matter). Feliz is just a stopgap, but not one that will disrupt the clubhouse or cost them a ton of money. He's not something to get excited about, but he's also not something too get upset about.
Even when you get younger, it's still good to have a few veterans around to teach the young kids a thing or two. And Feliz isn't nearly as old as Bonds, Vizquel, Roberts, Aurilia, and all those kinds of players they kept trying to bring in.
