On Thursday morning, the National League standings looked like this:

Diamondbacks 88 70
    Mets 87 71
    Padres 87 71
    Phillies 86 72
    Rockies 86 72

It's possible that after games are completed Sunday, the standings could look like this:

Diamondbacks 89 73
    Mets 89 73
    Padres 89 73
    Phillies 89 73
    Rockies 89 73

I admit, the thought of a five-way tie has me geeked up. You'd have to hold an NL East tiebreaker and a three-way NL West tiebreaker. Then you'd have to take the three losers and have a three-way wild-card tiebreaker. (Jayson Stark outlines the scenario here.) That would be four games of intense everything-on-the-line baseball. Meanwhile, we could maybe have a Cubs-Brewers NL Central tiebreaker going on as well.

Now, since Arizona already beat Pittsburgh today, we need the Rockies to lose tonight as they need to enter their weekend series with the D-backs an odd number of games behind. But if that happens, and the Rockies sweep and the other teams go the necessary 2-2 or 3-1, we have our five-way tie.

I think I may have to call in sick for work.

Oh, and if a five-way tie doesn't get you pumped up, maybe this will: According to Nate Silver's article at Baseball Prospectus, if the Mets, who had a 99.8 percent chance of making the playoffs on Sept. 12, miss the playoffs, it would be the second greatest playoff chase collapse of all time.

Yes it is possible. I'm just hoping the Mets fall our completely.

If this were to happen, imagine how at least 1 of the teams would have to fly from city to city to another city within 3/4 days? What a taxing way to get into the post season.
