Reeling Mets look to rebound, climb out of tie with Phillies

Florida (69-90) at NY Mets (87-72) 7:10 pm EDT

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Mets have companyatop the National League East Division for the first time sinceMay 16.

The free-falling Mets look to snap a four-game skid and maintainat least a share of the division lead Friday when they host theFlorida Marlins in the opener of a critical three-game series.

The Mets have lost 11 of their last 16 games to watch theironce-commanding lead in the NL East disappear.

New York owned a seemingly comfortable seven-game lead over thePhiladelphia Phillies (87-72) as recently as September 13. Noteam has ever not finished in first place after having at leasta seven-game advantage with 17 games to play.

The Mets have watched their pitching evaporate over the past 16games, as the staff has allowed an average of 7.25 runs per gamein that span.

New York will turn to lefthander Oliver Perez (15-9, 3.32 ERA)to stop the bleeding. Perez turned in the team's best pitchingperformance during their current slide, allowing two runs - oneearned - over eight innings to pick up a win last Saturday atFlorida.

Perez is 3-0 in four September starts, allowing 14 runs - butonly eight earned. New York's defense has committed nine errorsin Perez's outings this month.

The Marlins will counter with Byung-Hyun Kim (9-8, 6.11), whohas lost his last two starts. The Korean righthander made hisonly appearance this season vs. the Mets last Saturday, allowingfive runs - four earned - in five innings of a 7-2 loss.

Florida lost three of four games to the Mets last weekend athome and is just 5-10 this season against New York.

Maine and second-place Mets aim to stop five-game skid

Florida (70-90) at Ny Mets (87-73) 1:10 pm EDT

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - The New York Mets are in danger ofmaking history for all the wrong reasons.

In the midst of a historic collapse, the reeling Mets hope tostop a five-game losing streak Saturday when they face theFlorida Marlins.

The Mets held a seven-game lead over Philadelphia in theNational League East on September 12. But the Mets havesquandered that advantage and now find themselves one gamebehind Philadelphia (88-72) with two games left.

New York fell out of first place for the first time sinceMay 15 with Friday's 7-4 loss.

Maine (14-10, 4.07 ERA) will try and do his part to help NewYork avoid becoming the first team in history to fail to win thepennant after holding at least a seven-game lead on September12.

The Mets need Maine to get back on track they are going to avoidtheir ninth straight loss here. The 26-year-old righthander hasjust two wins in his last 10 starts, and is 0-2 with a 8.24 ERAin four September starts.

Meanwhile, rookie Chris Seddon (0-1, 6.89) takes the mound forFlorida, which is relishing playing the role of spoiler. TheMarlins swept the NL Central champion Chicago Cubs earlier thisweek.

Seddon, who is making his seventh career start, allowed two runsand three hits in five innings against New York on Sunday. Heopposed Maine in that start and did not receive a decision.

Glavine and Mets trying to keep playoff hopes alive

Florida (70-91) at NY Mets (88-73) 1:10 pm EDT

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- A fight and a near no-hitter mayhave given the New York Mets the spark they need to avoid ahistoric collapse.

The Mets head into the final game of the season against theFlorida Marlins on Sunday with a chance to wrap up the NationalLeague East Division as long as they get a little help.

Behind a stellar pitching performance by Maine, which includedonly one hit and a career-high 14 strikeouts, New York rolled toa 13-0 win on Saturday to pull even with the PhiladelphiaPhillies (88-73) in the NL East.

The Phillies dropped a 4-2 loss to the Washington Nationals intheir only game atop the NL East to fall into the tie.

Should the Mets fail to win the NL East, they would become thefirst team in history to fail to win the pennant after holding aseven-game lead with 17 games to play.

New York is also one game behind the San Diego Padres (89-72) inthe wild card.

Saturday's contest also had some fireworks, as Marlins catcherMiguel Olivo charged across the diamond in the fifth inning togo after the Mets' Jose Reyes, igniting a bench-clearing brawl.

Now, Tom Glavine (13-7, 4.14 ERA) makes one of the biggeststarts of his career with the Mets, and perhaps the last.

Glavine, who is a free agent at the end of the season, is comingoff a rough outing last time out, giving up six runs and ninehits over five innings in a 10-9 loss to the Nationals onTuesday.

Glavine will be opposed by Dontrelle Willis (10-15, 5.20), whohas had great success against New York. The lefthander is 11-3with a 2.49 ERA in 18 starts against the Mets, but is just 0-1with a 7.36 ERA in two starts vs. them this season.

If New York and Philadelphia finish tied for the division leadthere will be a one-game playoff on Monday at Citizen's BankPark.
