Padres, Brewers aim to engineer runs for division crown

San Diego (88-71) at Milwaukee (81-78) 8:05 pm EDT

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres and the MilwaukeeBrewers both have just three games left to make their finalcharge towards the postseason.

Future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux will take the mound as thePadres look for their fourth consecutive victory when theycontinue a crucial four-game series with the Brewers on Friday.

San Diego leads the National League wild card, but also sitsjust one game behind the Arizona Diamondbacks (89-70) in thedivision race. Arizona will kick off a three-game series withthe surging Colorado Rockies (87-72), who have won 11 straightcontests and have pulled to within two games of the NL West andone game in the wild card.

Milwaukee will need a lot of help to get in the playoffs, trailing the Chicago Cubs (83-76) by two games in the NLCentral. Chicago, which was just swept by the lowly FloridaMarlins, will begin a three-game set with Cincinnati Reds.

The Padres will hand the ball to a proven veteran in Maddux(13-11, 4.10 ERA). The four-time NL Cy Young Award winner haswon 13 games in each of his last 20 seasons.

The 41-year-old Maddux has won three of his last five starts, including two of three on the road. He was roughed up in hislast outing, giving up five runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 inningsof a 7-3 loss to the Rockies.

With the Brewers desperate for a win, the wrong guy might beheading to the mound. Chris Capuano (5-12, 5.09 ERA) has losthis previous 12 decisions. And worse yet, the Brewers arewinless the last 21 times Capuano has pitched.

The 29-year-old lefthander is only getting the start because BenSheets in unable to go with an injured hamstring.

Milwaukee has lost six of its last nine games, including a 9-5loss in Thursday's opener.

Padres look to lock up wild card vs. Brewers

San Diego (89-72) at Milwaukee (82-79) 2:05 pm EDT

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres will get anotherchance to lock up a postseason berth.

The Padres will attempt to get that victory and avoid having toplay an extra game when they conclude the regular season againstthe Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.

Thanks in part to the heroics by the offspring of thefranchise's most regarded player, San Diego lost on Saturday in11 innings, 4-3.

The Padres had a 3-2 edge in the ninth inning, but All-Starcloser Trevor Hoffman blew the lead when Tony Gwynn Jr. tripledin the tying run. Rookie Vinny Rottino drove in the game winnertwo innings later.

Although San Diego trails Arizona (90-71) by one game in theNational League West, the Diamondbacks wrapped up the divisiontitle with a win over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. In thewild card, the Padres own a slim one-game edge over the Rockies(88-73), New York Mets (88-73) and Philadelphia Phillies(88-73).

If the Padres lose on Sunday, they would be involved in atiebreaker depending on the results of the Rockies, Mets andPhillies.

San Diego will send veteran Brett Tomko (4-11, 5.39 ERA) to themound. The righthander was signed off waivers on September 4,and therefore is not eligible for the postseason roster, but hasbeen solid since coming to the Padres.

Tomko is 2-0 with a 3.52 ERA in six games - three starts - inSeptember. He made one start this season against the Brewerswhile with the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 21, surrendering fiveruns and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings to suffer a loss.

The Brewers will counter with righthander Jeff Suppan (11-12,4.57). The veteran went two months without a win between Julyand August, but has recovered to go 3-1 with a 3.45 ERA in fiveSeptember outings.

He has struggled in his career against the Padres, owning a 3-3mark with a 6.26 ERA in eight starts.
