QUOTE

CLEVELAND: The Cavaliers are poised to make their first move of the offseason.

The team is close to an agreement with veteran free agent guard Devin Brown, his agent Derrick Powell said Thursday. The deal, which is believed to be for one season, could be finalized as soon as today.

Brown, 29, is coming off a career season with the New Orleans Hornets in which he averaged 11.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 56 games, 49 of them starts. At 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds, he can play both guard positions and small forward.

He started 12 games at point guard for the Hornets last season. He has also been known as a good defender during his career.

''We hope this will be a good fit if we can get the deal done,'' Powell said. ''We turned down other offers; Devin wanted to find a good fit and he could be very good for Cleveland.''

If the contract is finalized, it will give the Cavs additional depth in the backcourt. The team is currently in a contract stalemate with restricted free agent swingman Sasha Pavlovic.

Source: Akron Beacon Journal

Devin Brown will be an underrated offseason move by the Cavs. He's familiar with Mike Brown's system having played with the San Antonio Spurs early in his career. He had his best seasons in a structured system and will be a solid rotation player off the bench. He's an above average wing defender, and won't hurt you on offense. Good value signing by Ferry.

First of all, the first thing that pops into my head is: "Does this mean Sasha is gone?" Devin Brown is a good player, but I'm not so sure about this for Cleveland. They have more than enough 2-guards on the roster, and this would also hold back the development of Shannon Brown, who I think is going to be a pretty good player. Devin Brown is a good player who should be in somebody's rotation, but I'm not so sure he fits in Cleveland.

Devin's a good pickup...so does this mean Hughes will see more time at the point? as bad of a player as he can be at times, i recall the Cavs being very successful with Hughes as the starting point.

Sure Brown fits will with the offense and is a decent shooter, but now they have Hughes, Gibson, Snow, Devin Brown, Shannon Brown, and Sasha all pretty much playing the same positions. Still no upgrade at PG and I dont think any of them are good compliments to LeBron, besides Gibson who is better suited off the bench.

Devin Brown can play minutes at small forward. He'll likely replace David Wesley, since only a partial amount of Wesley's current contract is guaranteed. I think Peg182 is right in assuming Hughes will play more minutes at PG. They are probably going to rely on Hughes and Boobie to play the bulk of the minutes at PG.
They should definitely develop Shannon Brown more by getting him more playing time with the starters. He's had an impressive offseason from articles I've read, and has all the talent in the world to succeed in the league. Last year he said there were politics behind his lack of playing time, so who knows if that's been resolved or not.

I know LeBron James would do anything to bring back Varejao and Vujacic but with the Cavs being so close to the luxuary tax, I don't know if that's likely that can bring in both guys this year. I do like this signing for the Cavaliers, he's been an underrated player last year and he can only improve as time goes on. I think they'll be fine aslong asLarry Hughes stays healthy and produces the way the Cavs expected him to when they signed him, but the only problem is if they can replace Varejao with Simmons and Marshall.
