he New Orleans Hornets announced today that they have traded forward Cedric Simmons to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for the contract of David Wesley and cash considerations.

“This trade will help us in a number of areas heading into training camp,” said General Manager Jeff Bower. “We will be able to focus on developing the additions we’ve made to our frontcourt, it gives us increased flexibility in regards to salary cap management and it gives us the room to add to our roster if we see fit.”

Wesley will be waived by the Hornets once Simmons has completed his physical and the trade has been finalized. The veteran guard, whose contract is not fully guaranteed, was not expected to play for the Cavaliers this season.

Simmons, who was selected by the Hornets with the 15th overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, averaged 2.9 points and 2.5 rebounds in 43 games as a rookie last season.

Excellent deal for Cleveland. They got a solid young big man who is extremely athletic and has a decent upside, and got rid of practically nothing. Ced obviously has a ways to go before he can call himself an established player, but this is a nice low-risk, high reward deal for Cleveland.

With the recent acquisitions of Brown and Simmons, I'm really starting to wonder about Varejao and Sasha.

Eh, I don't know. It gives them cash to help with resigning players, and Cedric was buried on their depth chart.

Hornets just gave away a solid player for nothing, David Wesely is probably going to the cut by the Hornets. Memo to VarejaoCavs are willing to part with you!!!

I guess they didn't see alot in Cedric after his rookie season. However, I can't help but feeling that the addition of Simmons to the Cavs means bye-bye to Anderson Varejao while Devin Brown is replacing Sasha Pavlovic.
