Should have thought of this: the Nets have a $2.7 million trade exception which doesn't expire til January 2. TE's can be used to take a players off waivers as long as the TE is larger than the player's salary. Armstrong has a vets' minimum contract that if guaranteed pays him $1.219M.</p> The Nets used the TE they got from the Martin trade to take Elden Campbell off the waiver wires in 2005. In fact, they were the first to use a TE in that manner. Smart.</p>

If this is correct, and I believe it is, he is Nets' property. Remember, Elden Campbell didnt want to report to the Nets but had no choice. He told the Indianapolis Star-News, he was going to either Dallas or New Jersey. It now appears that decision has been made for him.</p> It would give the Nets 14 guaranteed contracts, one partially guaranteed deal (Hite) and the remainder of the training camp roster with non-guaranteed deals (Allen, Benson, Cleaves, Gill, Jones) and one player left to be heard from (Houston). Once this gets done, Cleaves and Gill may as well head for Europe on the next plane. The questions then become: Hite, Houston or Jones? Allen? Ilic buyout? A trade?</p> </p>

Now, if the Nets do manage to grab D.Armstrong off the waiver wire, am I the only onethinking maybe we should be trying to revisit the trade with Indy for J. O'neal if we also land Houston? I think if we offered the trade of Jefferson, Krstic, and Marcus Williams as Indy orig. wanted we could still land him and then we could still try and shop for another point guard if needed, or wecould use someone like Hitefor insurance of injuries and things like that. Kidd,Vince,Wright,O'neal and Magloire would be anice starting 5 with Armstrong, Houston, Hite, Nachbar, Boone, S. Williams, etc. on the bench.</p>

this is fantastic news. not only will DA be a great backup while marcus is out and DA is just another guy who can teach marcus. learning from kidd AND armstrong? what else could a young pg ask for? i was totally shocked when i read this because all reports were that he was basical a mav already, but for us to end up with him is a great acquisition.</p> i hope we can get rid of Mile because i would like to add malik to the roster. after armstrong comes here i am also assuming that houston will come to camp and make the team. i would like Mile to be moved so we can keep Malik Allen. i am getting even more excited for this traning camp/preseason beacuse the competition should be good and hopefully chemestry is being built quickly and strongly.</p> our bench is looking stronger and stronger. i am liking it</p>

If Armstrong signs with the Nets, they should immediately approach him about becoming an assistant coach upon his retirement.</p> I wonder - can they can actually sign him to a contract that activates when he is no longer active?</p>

I'm sure you can activate him if he was an assistant coach only. There's been numerous players who has retired and come back. Just got to fill out the necessary documents with the Office. I think Detroit's going to have Lindsey Hunter as a player coach this year.</p> Great pick up smart move. And he only counts 700,000 towards the lux tax as a vet minimum deal.</p>
Darrell Armstrong is undoubtedly the best option right now. His per-minute production was actually equivalent to what it was four and five years ago.</p> However, I've got to say that I really hope that this team does not become a refuge for veterans playing out the end of their careers (see: Miami). Players like Armstrong and Houston may be able to contribute this year, but they are fool's gold in the sense that they don't have a long-term future, and making room for them on the roster prevents the team from developing players that could have more of a long-term impact.</p> For an example, look no further than Armstrong himself. He wasn't drafted out of college; played in other leagues including Europe for a few years. When he did make the Magic as a 26-year-old, he played very sparingly for a few years before finally getting a chance to perform. At age 28, he played 15 minutes a game, which increased to 25, 30, 31, and 36 over the next few years. It would have been very easy for the Magic to just carry some retread instead, but they gave Armstrong the opportunity to develop.</p> Maybe someone like Hite could have a career like Armstrong. Maybe Benson. Maybe Antoine can improve every year and before long have a solid career. The thing is, if you just carry players like Houston and Armstrong, you never have a chance to develop those guys, because they'll never get any minutes (if they are even on the roster at all). If the Nets sign Houston, I fear that Antoine will be the one to suffer.</p> Yes, the Nets are kind of in a win-now mode, so it is understandable. However, there still needs to be some balance. Even with Armstrong, even with possibly Houston, I still hope that a few of the unheralded guys get a chance to stick around and develop. Maybe that means Hite. Maybe Bernard, who no one likes for no apparent reason. The Nets made a big mistake a few years ago when they let Mikki Moore go after his first stint on the team. Hopefully, they won't get blinded by experience and lose someone else with potential. I'm just afraid that they will go with Malik Allen and Jumaine Jones and will dump Hite, Benson, BRob, etc.</p>

If the Ilic buyout is successful, I hope Benson is signed, too.</p>
