Maybe the Rockies still pull a victory out of their butts last night, but for the Padres to lose a chance at the playoffs on a run that never scored is embarrassing for baseball. The instant replay showed from several angles that Holliday never touched homeplate. Barrett blocked it perfectly and Holliday whiffed as he planted his face into the dirt.
The umpire was in position to clearly see him miss the plate, gave a delayed signal, and then decided to call him safe? What was running through his mind for that split second delay? "They're going to win anyways and I'm tired so I'll end the game now"

^^ WHIFF ^^

I watched the game to, and while the replays didn't show definitively that he did touch the plate, I don't think they showed definitively that he didn't, either. The baseline camera angle showed his hand going towards the base before getting cleated by Barrett, and some dust flies up, whereas the other angles are blocked off by Holliday's body as he slid past with his left arm reaching.
I also think there's been an overblown reaction to this, because I think the in-game announcers overstated the peculiarity of the umpire's delayed call for the sake of discussion and controversy. I watch a fair amount of baseball, and I see it happen every now and then on a plate at home that an umpire will make a delayed call, especially in a situation where he might not be sure if the ball was even caught. When the ball comes in to Barrett, he misses it, and it rattles around close to his chest a little before rolling out to the slight left. The delayed call, in my opinion, was probably because the ump was trying to see if the ball had been fielded.

I think the Padres weren't robbed. If there was instant replay i think it was Atkins who got a double instead of a home run. Then the Pads would've lost in 9 innings.

This is why replay should be imperative in baseball, they got screwed. Who is to say that Trevor would've pulled it together and got out of the inning with just the blown save, but you never know.

Barrett sealed off the plate and Holliday made no attempt to wrap around and get his hand on the plate.
Maybe it was karma for the umpire missing the HR call. I just hate to see a great game decided by a missed call.

Maybe it'll make the game 10-15 minutes longer but not a big deal

I started throwing things around the room after that run scored. I thought he missed the plate as well, but I still cant believe Trevor Hoffman blew the biggest game of the season twice in 3 days and now no playoffs for the Padres... Thisis making me sick, at least I can cheer for Arizona, but San Diego had the pitching to make a run this postseason.

They blew both calls obviously. The HR-Double and the touching of home plate. I thought there was enough video evidence to show that the plate had to be blocked.
I really wish they'd get rid of the home plate ump for balls & strikes tho. They are wrong so often it's terrible. Just use the computer box or like what they do in tennis. I know they'll never do this but it really ruins baseball for me to see bad calls on balls & strikes on a consistant basis when it could be corrected.

I hate the Padres so I could give a damn about them but looking at the play the Padres got robbed and I think thats wrong but I think that colorado would of won the game anyways. But it was destiny for Colorado to win.

Yes, Barrett blocked the plate, but his cleat did slide across it due to the impact of Holliday making contact with it. There's probably only one person who knows whether or not he made contact with the plate, and that's Holliday himself. Replay wouldn't have changed anything because there is no conclusive evidence.
