Welcome to S2 JamCity15.
I got the 2k8 because of all the great reviews that it got. (and also because celticballa32 said it would be game of the year)

welcome aboard! I just came home with 2K8 (pre-ordered it) why? I got 2K7 when I got the PS3...I had an older 2K on Dreamcast. Haven't played a Live game probably since PS1
Historically, the 2k series is more realistic, this year, they've claimed to improved the AI to the point that if you have no hoops knowledge, you'll get whipped.. Live is an arcade game with all the little extras.

I'm really excited about play diagrams getting displayed on the ground. The only plays I ran in 2k7 were pick and rolls, and massively unrealistic fastbreak tendencies. This should also revolutionize online play too; something I've stayed away from because of the cheese

QUOTE (Universe)

I got 2K8 today and Sean Williams already had four nice blocks. I love it.

now THAT is what I want to hear. Universe what lineup are you using?

QUOTE (GMJigga)

Ghoti what are your impressions of the game? Thumbs up, down?

I really like it so far.
I've played 2K a lot, so the controls are easy for me to pick up.
It's definitely more like real basketball than the "pass it around the perimeter and penetrate" repetitiveness of two years ago.
Last year's was not much of an upgrade over that, but this one is much, much better.
One thing I love is that FINALLY 2K has fixed the save system. Now it saves my coaching preferences. I don't have to turn off auto subs every goddamn game like in every previous 2K game going back to the Dreamcast.
I started on Superstar and it's a challenging game right off the bat, but not so difficult I can't win.
I've only played a few games, so I'm fiddling around with it. I want to get the quarter times and options right so the scores and stats are realistic for my Association.
I also tried the dunk contest and it's pretty fun. It's not too different from the ones in the previous Lives, but there's more variations.
I can't make a shot in the 3-point contest. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

i got nba2k8 today for the 360 and it is amazing. if you want an arcade game then get live, but i always want realistic sport games so ive been buying 2k the past few years. live just got too arcade-ish for me. and yes, sean williams is sweet in this game, he has like a 91 block rating before he even played 1 nba game. sweet. maybe next year it will be 99

One small gripe.
I LOVE the lockdown trigger. I have always used it and now it's much better.
However, when you push up on the right stick to put your hands up, it's impossible to switch to the block button in time to block a shot.

Saving my coaches settings are going to be a big help. Changing my subs to manual was always cumbersome.
The 3-point competition is somewhat hidden, in the sense of instructions. If you go to your options menu there should be an option for showing a 'shot meter.' This is what you have to line up to hit your shot (rather than normally release it at the apparent top of your jump), and it is turned off as a default, although I don't know why.
Also, you have to bring the shot stick down in order to shoot; not up. Although this isn't made that clear, any shot stick movement that is not down will always be registered as a miss (from a 2k developer on OS)
hope this helps!

I am one of those people who likes a more arcade-y kind of basketball, but not in the vein of NBA street or anything, so I picked up Live for the 360 and while i'm only a handful of games in I have one big gripe. The major problem is that yer player indicator disappears and sometimes never comes back forcing you to abort games and start over from the dashboard to get it to reappear. I have no idea how stuff like that gets past programmers so hopefully there will be some updates down the road to fix that but that's about it. Personally I think Live is easier to get into as I just play for fun but has a ton of realism this year and is the upgrade we should have had last year and then some. If anybody's curious about specifics feel free to ask.

what difficulty level are you using, Reg?
I tried all star on the PS3 and PSP, and it's near impossible. maybe i just gotta get used to it.
I got Live for the PSP over NBA 08...probably a mistake, but I can't live without the Dynasty mode.
