Oh, yeah. LaDainian is hot and he is taking San Diego all the way. Yesterday afternoon was just another example of why he is #1 in the league right now.
One man can't do it all. Everything is still wide open and up for grabs until a team wins the Super Bowl. I would think that they are the current favorites but it takes more than being a favorite to win. They actually have to go out there and do it against very stiff competition.

San Diego's looking really good, but they are just a tweaked hamstring away from mediocrity. That's why they play the games...
Would you believe that near the beginning of the season, they had to give away their tickets to fill the stadium up and lift the blackout? And when it was midway through, they had to advertise to sell out tickets and they almost had to wait a few hours before the game to sell out. They really don't have the best fans when it comes to filling up the stadium and I still can't find out why. I mean, the weather is one of the best compared to Foxboro or Lambeau, the team is at their best, and only near the end of the season they have to advertise to sell tickets? The last time I went to a Chargers game, it was pretty funny actually. They lost to the Jets in the playoffs. Never went to another game since. But if they were to meet again at Qualcomm, I'm definetely in that game with a McNair jersey on.
Oh yeah, about those Raider fans. During the Raiders/Chargers game at San Diego, it was clear who bought more tickets. And it wasn't the Charger fans.
For as long as I have been a fan of the Chargers (18 years), i'll admit that there hasn't been a huge dedicated fan base when compared to other teams..But you have to take into consideration a few factors: First of all you have to realize that San Diego is a resort city. There is a lot of stuff to do in this town when compared to other cities with NFL franchises. Southern California in general provides a huge variety of entertainment, and SD in particular offers a multitude of fun, yet cheaper alternatives then to go to a football game on a Sunday afternoon..I know it's not the best of excuses but it is a reality. When other teams play their football games on sunday, they are the only shows in town..Over here there are probably 10 more things you could be doing. Secondly, you have to remember that the city of San Diego is a melting pot for people from all around the nation and world. With great weather year round, beautiful beaches, etc..., it's no surprise that a lot of transplants from the mid west and east coast come to live here. Add to the fact that SD is a huge military town, so it makes sense that all the people who moved here brought their original home town sport loyalties with them.Because of this, the competition of scalpers selling away 20-35% of Qualcomm's tickets to opposing teams fans is tough. Thirdly, for as long as I have been watching the Chargers, there also haven't been many good teams to draw in a crowd..They have pretty much lived in the shadow of the Raiders, Broncos and Chiefs throughout their existence.A team that has a ton of losing seasons will dwindle down season ticket holders, and with the financial problems the city of San Diego has faced recently,and the threat of the team moving to another city, has also caused some damage to the fan base. However with all that said, the Chargers still have a ton of diehard fans...I know of a lot of people that have been following this team since the early 60's when they first started out in the AFL. Our fans have been steadily improving in the last 3-5 years, and we will be representing the AFC West well in the playoffs this year. Our 12th man factor has been awesome, and hopefully in a few years our crowd tradition can match the likes of the Chiefs and Broncos.

The impression that I get from being there is that the team's fan base is mostly made up of retirees (mostly military, I'm sure). I look around and see many silver or grey haired Charger fans, while half of the stadium are younger, and wearing Silver and Black Raiders gear. I am sure that the crowd demographics change slightly with the Chargers' very recent successes, probably SD State students who have decided to go watch NFL history being made by LT, and likely going deep into the playoffs this year. The Raider fans that live near LA tend to be less friendly than the old timers that I meet in Oakland. I'm sure that the retirees are scalping that game as soon as they can find a buyer. Combine all of this together, and you can understand why Raider games in San Diego are largely represented by Raider fans.
If the Colts play the Chargers in the playoffs, i think the chargers will win. Colts have proven they struggle vs 3-4 defenses because they try to get their guards to block the OLBs coming on blitz. Those guards just can handle Merriman and all those other great Charger OLB. Also, the colts can not stop the run, espically vs a power run team. I think Micheal Turner will do good against that colts defense because at 240 he is bigger than their LBs, and LT will find ways to score on every play. The team i think the chargers will struggle against is the ravens. That game is going to be a toss up. That ravens defense has the potential to shut tomlinson down, and that offense is coming around. But i do think the chargers will have the best chance at winning the Super Bowl.

But that was about 12 weeks ago so...
