13 fully guaranteed contracts: Kidd, Carter, Jefferson, Krstic, Colllins, Magloire, Nachbar, MWilliams, Boone, Wright, Ilic, Robinson, SWilliams.

2 partially guaranteed contracts: Hite and Armstrong (15)

5 non-guaranteed contracts: Allen, Jones, Cleaves, Gill, and Benson (20)

Plus Houston (21). An NBA team cannot carry more than 20 players in training camp and have to get down to 15 by October 29.

I have to think Cleaves and Gill see the handwriting on the wall and even without Houston, one might head off to Europe, where the season has begun.

Assuming Ilic is bought out or simply waived ($870K loss), the choices could come down to Allen or Jones for the 15th spot. Everyone assumes that Allen will make the team. I don't . Jones may be a better choice for the Nets. There is a two-inch difference in height, but Allen's range is limited, he cannot run the floor and he never had a season like Jones did in 2005-06, when he went for 10 and 7 off the bench for an admittedly woeful Bobcat team. Also, the Nets didn't give Allen, a six year vet, any money upfront. Cutting him costs nothing. And if Wright doesnt measure up, I wouldnt be surprised if the Nets traded him for a pick and gave Jones his spot.

As for Houston, I trust Frank's assessment that he would make a big impact.

Hm good point about choosing Jones over Allen. My past analysis had only considered Jones fighting for a spot at the 3; I didn't know he was only 2 inches shorter than Allen.

I'm thinking start off with the 13 guaranteed

Drop Illic, I don't care if its a buyout or a waive (12)

    Keep Armstrong (13)

    Sign Houston, Jones, Benson.....oh sh**

...it looks like the only chance Benson has of making the roster are if Houston goes to the knicks, or both Brob and Illic are waived.

    JKidd, Marcus, DA

    VC, Wright, Houston

    RJ, Boki, BRob

    Nenad, Boone, Allen

    Collins, Big Cat, Sean

That's 15 and a pretty nice distribution of players to boot. Robinson gets the nod over the young non guaranteed players to try and save some cash and use as a trade chip later. Simple as that.

Even if Houston comes aboard, there's room for one of the players with non-guaranteed contracts to make the team if Ilic is bought out. Cleaves and Gill are obviously not candidates with the addition of Armstrong. Hite would be superfluous with the addition of Houston. So the way i see it, the last spot would come down to Jones, Malik Allen, and Benson. Why not Rod? After all, sometimes it seems that the marketing arm runs the team--and what could be better marketing than Rod Benson's wit and wisdom? Boki will get most of his minutes at the 4 anyway; whichever one of those three makes the team will spending a lot of time waving towels.

And keep in mind that Rod Benson could very well have been drafted had he not gotten injured minutes into his senior year. He's not some random guy. Well, OK, so he is. My point is that he has potential. Remember, he runs the floor well and has great vertical leap. He can still make the team if he plays defense this month.

I think Houston is enough for the marketing team out of our late additions, hell they already started lobbying to NYK fans by some accounts. Boki at the 4 won't work against every team and with one big coming back from knee surgery(Krstic), one who seemingly has an injury every couple months(Boone), and one who may not be ready (Sean) we need a post with some experience who can body up bigger players and has an offensive game outside of anything right around the rim (Collins, Big Cat). Sure Jumaine's only a few inches shorter but he's not and adequate defender at that position nor is he enough of a threat to keep his man guarding him on the perimiter. Malik may not have the numbers to back it up but he's a really good roleplayer with a 10-15 foot jumper who does whatever you ask of him and has knowlegde of every prominant big in the league. I know Rod is the fan pick to join the team but unless he does something to really make a case for himself in preseason it's hard to see him getting the nod as he wouldn't fit the "win now mode" theme of the offseason as we try to add more vets to our already young bench.

I'd say Jones makes it, he's probably the best player among those unguaranteed's (and Hite).

Wow, I completely forgot Hite has a partially guaranteed contract. If Mile gets bought out, I wish that him or Benson could make the team.

Although, really, Malik is probably the best option of those unguaranteed's at training camp.

Maybe that case for himself is playing time at SF? Much like I forgot that JJ could play the 4, I don't think a lot of attention has been played to Benson's shooting ability. That versatility could land him a spot: he can run the floor, shoot (?), so who knows. I'm curious how aware Thorn is of Benson's fan base in the Nets community.

Man everytime I see something new I get a whole different idea of how the roster will end up. It's going to be a crazy next 2 weeks.

Writing on the wall for the Nets.....but not the rest of the league. I think they know there will be plenty of preseason minutes at the point to show their wares. Teams in need of a PG, may like Cleaves or Gill. I think they'll be around for most of preseason to showcase what they got and hopefully catch on with someone's 15th spot.

Haha, Ghoti, yeah, we should commend that NBA should add the roster spots to 21.

Well, most teams have 20 players in camp, and at least three PGs, but there are a few exceptions. There are only so many spots available. It's very hard to play in the NBA.
