Now who do you think were the greatest empires ever in the history of the world. And I must admit that there have been some pretty good ones over time.

    I say first off

    1. British empire-Dominated Technology and Land in Pre Victorian times and we owned pretty much everywhere

    2. Viking Empire

    3. Roman Empire

    4. Ottoman Empire

    5. American Empire

About the British Empire, IMO its still alive today. Even though Britain doesn't control their "countries" or "land" that they had (which wasn't their anyway), they still left an impact so big that in turn if you look at Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, they're like sister countries to Britain.

Thats one, second, take a look at the english language, because of the empire, now its the number one language spoken on this earth, the official language of business, or better yet the official language of this planet. lol

Other than that I'd say Ottoman was pretty big, the effect are felt to this day.

Actually, it is the third most spoken language behind 1, Mandarin Chinese and 2, Spanish.

Well yea, thats true, but english is the number one language that is spoken in most countries around the world. chinese is for example only in china. spanish only latin america and spain, and so on, while english is the official language of everyone. chinese learn english, while we don't learn, or we don't have to learn chinese unless you're going to live in china and need it. (or you like to learn langauges)

    Thats what I meant.

Also not true. Mandarin Chinese is taught in many schools across the US and some in England now. It is considered one of the two easiest languages to learn along with Spanish with a difficulty rating of 4 each. Englishat5, French 7, German 10 and Japanese 17 for kicks. Mandarin Chinese is also a must for most companies considering the surging power of Chinese corporate and trading around the globe. It is the simplest form of Chinese, which is why most speak this instead. Spanish on the other hand you're right about as it is overpowered in the rank due to how many Spanish speaking countries there are.

In terms of total area covered its really hard to argue against the Mongolian Empire. At its peak it covered Southern Russia, Mongolia, China, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, and a small bit of Eastern Europe. That's massive! Over 30 million square kilometers of territory.

In terms of culture the Romans are hard to beat. Entire styles of architecture, literature, law, religion, and customs would change as a result of the Russian empire. Latin is a base language of most of the worlds languages today.

Yep, in terms of size it must be the Mongolian Empire, apparently Gengis Khan had control over twice the size of waht the Romans had in their peak

But in culture the Romans take it

The Mongolian Empire is without a doubt the greatest in terms of land conquered, and in how fast that was. The Roman Empire was also magnificent, especially in how everything was governed. The Hunnic Empire was also impressive.

The Vikings never had a real empire... In fact, they usually didn't conquer land, although it did happen at times. They were skilled tradesmen who sometimes pillaged and looted. Raiding parties often consisted of the men of a few villages.

As for the USA being an empire... Get real. Reading the definition(s) of the word I have a hard time seeing how the USA would fit in to that, and by my personal definition, it's most definetly not one.

The Byzantine is another one. Also for me it'd have to be the Illyrian one as well. (throughout the ballkans) Not the biggest but they really got everything going together with the Greeks and it set up the Roman Empire.

I don't see why United States wouldn't be considered an empire.

Look at what the country started as. It was a small tract of land. The United States expanded across North America, similar to how the Roman Empire expanded across Europe. While the method of doing so was different, the results were similar, with the people in the new lands being given citizenship status, just like in the Roman Empire. In addition, the United States owned land not connected to its mainland, such as Alaska...once again, they just didn't use imperialism, and instead purchased their land instead. Their cultural influence is very much as impactful as that of the Roman Empires. I'd definitely consider the United States an empire.

United States, British, and Roman are the big three imo.

Whoa, German is rated a 10 on difficulty to learn? I did that in Primary school, it was easy as pie. Its bascially a bastardized version of English.

The US is defintely considered an empire...a small one, and not so much anymore though. The United States took over hundreds of indigenous tribe's land. I think people tend to look at the Native Americans as very small, uncivilized, nomadic tribes. In reality however some of these tribes had laws, foreign policy, and the Cherokee's even had a written constitution. Some experts say that there could have been well over 60 million people in North America when Columbus arrived. The US fulfilling manifest destiny is really no different than the Roman's conquering the Gauls or the Anglo tribes.

In addition to the Native American's the US also had overseas interests. Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, Hawaii, the US Virgin Islands, and even Cuba (for a short time) are all American territory acquisitions througout history.

Mongolian Empire and the Ottoman Empire are being severely under-ranked.

    What about communism?

Not so much but they had control of the two biggest countries at one point (Russia and China) Although i strongly disagree with it the base of it wasn't such a bad idea it was just Executed very Poorly. Though i still think Roman, Mongolian and English beats it [IMG]

Communism is an ideology, not a unified organization. As such, and just like with every other political ideology, there were/is vast differences in how the different states practised/practise it.
