Report: Steinbrenner says Torre's job on the line against Indians

QUOTE

As the Yankees stand on the brink of elimination in the first round of the playoffs for the third season in a row, owner George Steinbrenner says longtime manager Joe Torre needs his team to advance to the ALCS if he wants to keep managing the club.

"His job is on the line," Steinbrenner told The Bergen Record. "I think we're paying him a lot of money. He's the highest-paid manager in baseball, so I don't think we'd take him back if we don't win this series."

    ....

During his 12 years leading the Yankees, Torre has taken the Bronx Bombers to 12 consecutive playoff appearances and four World Series titles.

"He's been good for us over the years," Steinbrenner acknowledged to the paper.

I never liked Torre. Maybe it's because of the way he always looks pissed off, idk.

To me, it always seemed like he never really elevated the Yankees, and that it was always more about the players than the manager that made them a great team.

He sucks with the bullpen, and doesn't know how to say no. But his players love him. Expect a big day out of Rocket, ARod, Jeter, Posada, Matsui, Cano, and the whole crew.

Torre is a good manager but I don't think his job is on the line today.I doubt the Yankees could replace him with another manager. But I expect the Yankees to lose the series 3-1.

Wow. Clearly you haven't watched Torre over a season. Ever. Why do you think there are Joba rules? Because Torre's an idiot.

Obviously Torre will look better. He was managing one of the best teams EVER. Girardi was managing the Flordia Marlins.

I don't follow the Yankees I follow the Dodgers so I don't know much about the Torre and the Yankees but what you said is true and I think that the reason why Torre is good is because of the team he has.Look at the Lakers Phil had great winning seasons when they had great players and now with just Kobe Phil coaching is no good.

No. He was good because he could manage personalities. Girardi would be the best. Mattingly would be horrible.

Would the Yankees let go of both A-Rod and Torre?

Why would he say this right before the game? There's enough pressure on the Yankees and this creates drama in the locker room. George has been quiet all season, I wish he kept it that way.

No. Players LOVE Torre. He's just that kind of manager. They want him to win. Even for all his inadequacies, his players still love him.

Payrod will go w/ whoever offers him the most dead presidents... right now that's the cubs.

I can live w/ being disappointed by the Braves yet again as the postseason is looking pretty good right now. No Cubs or mets.Yankees not making the LCS would be sweet. Is it okay to do the Tomahawk Chop?

I don't mind the Rockies, but, FSRM & the Denver media are homers of the worst kind &listening to them makes me seriously ill.

Torre is okay & would not mind him succeeding Cox if Corrales doesn't. JT did play in Hotlanta.
