You are faulting Al for giving a guy a second chance? Most coaching tenures in the NFL end in the coach getting fired. Joe Gibbs is even on his second stint as head coach for his former team. What makes Al such a bad person in your eyes? Because he doesn't wear a suit and tie to the games? Because he has his own method of doing things? I was just reading this highly inflammatory article just now, it really got me riled up. http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctime...rs/16389579.htm He assumes so many things. I understand that people get picked on more often when they are different, but come on. You really don't need to make things up to prove a point. I guess its the assignment of blame that really gets me. How can you possibly know what or how each event went down? As for Porter, the author claims that Shell "picked a fight" with him, or Al told him to pick a fight with him. F-ing rediculous. Porter tried to pull a Terrell Owen last summer before training camp. Shell CALLED HIM ON IT! WTF!!!!!!!!!!! How can you sit there and twist that into "it's Art and Al's fault" that porter is a distraction to the rest of the team? I'm really pissed.

Its the owner.

Hiring Billl Callahan made sense at the time. He kept the playoff team Gruden built and then took them to the next level in 2002. Firing Callahan two years later also made sense, because in 2003 he managed to turn the entire team against him. If the entire team decides not to buy into your way, then what else is there to do? Get 52 new players? Come on. Hiring Turner seemed to make sense at the time. He had considered Shell at the time, but thought Turner had a slight edge over Shell, so Turner won that job that year. A well experience offensive coordinator, who also had HC experience. It turns out that Turner can't handle more than his offensive playcalling responsibilities, and the defense suffered tremendously during his reign. In Turner's last season, the Raiders went 0-6 in the division (First time in team history). His firing also made sense. Then, Al hires Shell. the team was a mess last season after Turner. Shell comes in with fire, trying to impose some order on the situation. He calls Jerry Porter on his decision not to come to the offseason meetings and workouts. I'm sorry, when you get a new coaching staff, you need to show up at the beginnin so you can build for the next season (first offseason for Art Shell). Porter was clearly in the wrong for not showing up, and he got everything he deserved. Please forgive Art Shell for stepping in and not letting some idiot like Porter set the tone. It really is a crappy Terrell Owens type of behavior exhibited by Porter. There are two things that I believe weighed heaviest in Shells firing. 1- His public venting and sparring with GM Mike Lombardi. The two just could not coexist, period. Lombardi was talking trash behind Shells back, and not giving him any help. Shell responded poorly to it, I think he could have taken a different approach to the problem. 2- Shell continued the Raiders winless streak in the AFC West that begun with Norv Turner. Al Davis insisted that Shell keep the same defensive staff from the previous year, that was the extent of what Davis imposed on his HC. He let Shell decide the offense. Shell made some poor choices on that side of the ball, which included the hiring of Tom Walsh as his O coordinator. In the end, Al was right in keeping Rob Ryan and his defense, Shell dropped the ball on his end. Al Davis is an offensive guy, but he knew he had a good young defense coming up. So we are left with a great, young, loyal defense, and Shell has left a bitterness in all the offensive players. It's pretty clear which direction Al should go in 2007. You can pretty much guarantee that the first pick of our draft will be offense this year.
