HONOLULU - The right ankle Kwame Brown had surgery on still was swollen Monday, leaving the 6-foot-11 center in the precarious state of not wanting to push things.

Coach Phil Jackson said Brown could possible play tonight when the Lakers take on the Golden State Warriors in their first exhibition game.

Brown, however, was of a different mind-set.

He didn't play the entire summer, was cleared to play a week before training camp opened here Oct. 2 and wasn't cleared to play full-court until the beginning of this week.

Brown, who also had left shoulder surgery this summer, has worked in very few contact drills.

"I just think it's going to take a little time," Brown said.

Jackson held Brown out of practice Monday and said "he wouldn't be surprised" if he played tonight.

"He was kind of aggressive and active enough that he really wants to play," Jackson said.

Jackson said Brown shot about 500 shots during practice. Asked what Brown's free-throw percentage, Jackson said "about 80."

Jackson smiled and then came the barb.

"About 80 out of 500," Jackson chided, laughing.

Jackson said he would make a decision today at the team's shootaround on whether Brown will play.

Brown didn't sound as if he would be suiting up.

"Would that be the smart thing to do? No," Brown said. "If this was a playoff game and I had to just soldier through it, yeah, I could play. That's kind of the position that we're in. I just want to get healthy so I don't have to play one game and then the next day I'm all sore."

The goal, Brown said, is to be healthy for the season opener, Oct. 30 against the Rockets.

"That's my goal," Brown said. "I hope that's their goal. I hope we're all on the same page. But I do understand that preseason gets you in some type of rhythm."

Brown is in a contract year, the last year of a $9.075 million a year.

The Lakers can give him a contract extension before the Oct. 31 deadline, but that probably won't happen.

Brown probably will become an unrestricted free agent when this season is over.

Jackson said Brown has complained at times to Lakers trainer Gary Vitti about pain in the ankle.

Vitti said he would hold Brown out if that were the case.

"Then there are some days it's like he really wants to play," Jackson said, "and test it out again because it feels good."

or trade him at the deadline for a much better player, to a team that desperatly needsa gain of 9 mil once kwame expires. i know that it is hard to trade someone that is so crap but who do you think we could get in return for kwame and maybe throw in one or two others? preferably a good PF with alot of toughness, but who?

Wow I hope we don't re-sign Kwame that will be a total waste of the Lakers money. We should really try to trade him before the deadline maybe we could get a decent player in return many teams would be interest in his contact.

I don't know why this Lakers team would even consider re-signing Kwame Brown. After a decent 05-06, he spent much of 06-07 healthy and when on the floor he didn't perform. With Mihm and Bynum as their 5 rotation, the Lakers wouldn't hurt from losing Kwame Brown. The Lakers can use the money to bring in someone who will actually please Kobe Bryant.

Maybe the Lakers can get the Ron Artest talks going again if Sacramento gets off to a slow start and Artest gets frustrated with their new head coach. The Kings have always had an eye on Jordan Farmar as a potential replacement for Mike Bibby.
