MADRID -- What Stromile Swift wore to practice Wednesday wasn't very fashionable.

This has nothing to do with the Grizzlies' gear. It's more about the sheepish grin on Swift's face as he talked about the foibles up front during the team's preseason-opening loss to Unicaja Malaga on Tuesday.

If you just looked at the rebounding numbers, Memphis got manhandled.

"I'm not taking anything away from their game," Swift said, "but (Boniface Ndong and Marcus Haslip) shouldn't have been able to do some of the things they did against us."

There surely would have been more than a few "amens" ringing out had Swift made that comment with a Memphis backdrop.

"The past couple of years, that's been our weakness," Swift said of shoddy rebounding. "We've got to work on that."

Tell coach Marc Iavaroni something he doesn't know.

Among the travails Iavaroni endured during the Grizzlies' first outing was watching a 20-rebound discrepancy -- something that led to too many second-chance points for Malaga.

What the Grizzlies learned in their first game is that they can't be as effective running and gunning on offense and claim better defense if they don't rebound.

"They've got to hit people first and create space where they can go get the ball," Iavaroni said of his frontcourt players. "And our guards have to take some responsibility. They've got to get in there, and not leak out on the fast break."
