<h3>Sabathia, Beckett set to battle in opener of ALCS</h3>

    <div class="pre">Cleveland at Boston 7:10 pm EDT</div><div class="pre">American League Championship Series Game One</div>

BOSTON (Ticker) -- C.C. Sabathia and Josh Beckett will get thechance to show why they should be named the American League CyYoung Award winner.

The Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox continue their journeyto the World Series in the opener of Friday's AL ChampionshipSeries at Fenway Park.

Sabathia gets the call for Cleveland, which made its way here bydefeating the New York Yankees, 3-1, in the AL DivisionalSeries.

In his 2007 postseason debut, the hard-throwing lefthander gaveup three runs and four hits with five strikeouts and six walksin five innings in winning Game One at Jacobs Field on October4.

"It was the first game against the Yankees, first game of theplayoffs, first playoff game in six years, so I was excited,"Sabathia said. "It was just one of those deals."

The 27-year-old Sabathia is coming off an impressive campaign, finishing with career highs in victories (19), strikeouts (209)and ERA (3.21) in 34 starts.

"I think when you look back to the middle of 2005 is when(Sabathia) really transitioned into the pitcher that you see,"Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "But obviously he's continuedto improve in the last couple of years right on top of that. Buthe made some adjustments to his game mentally, physically, fundamentally, emotionally, the whole nine yards.

"I mean, this is a guy that is a true No. 1, he's a leader ofour pitching staff. You look at the consistency to which hehandles himself and the toughness that he shows, obviously alongwith his ability, you've got an outstanding young man on themound there."

On July 24, Sabathia fanned seven batters through seven frames, but came up on the short end of the stick of a 1-0 setback toBoston. He is just 2-4 with a 3.91 ERA all-time in the series.

Beckett counters for the Red Sox, who returns to the ALCS since2004 after sweeping the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in theopening series.

The righthander was dominating in his postseason start againstthe Angels in Game One, striking out eight en route to afour-hit shutout on October 3.

"I've done the same thing I've done all year," Beckett said."You know, I was preparing for Monday, if we needed it, andfortunately we didn't end up needing a Game Four in that series. But just I've done the same thing that I've been doing."

A 20-game winner, the 27-year-old went 1-1 with a lowly 1.80 ERAin two starts vs. Cleveland, which defeated Beckett on July 25despite his four-hitter.

"I mean, they've got a lot of guys there swinging the bats alittle bit differently than they were then," Beckett said."They've got a couple new guys, so you've just got to go at itas a new game."

With pitching taking most of the headlines in Game One, TravisHafner and Victor Martinez hopes to outduel Boston's 1-2 punchof David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez.

Ortiz and Ramirez combined for four homers and seven RBI in theopening series.

"I think when they're both healthy, it certainly means a lot,not only to them but even to the guys in front of them andbehind them," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "Obviouslythe better more guys are swinging, the more dangerous yourlineup becomes, and I'm not just saying that."

<h3>Youth faces experience when Red Sox take on Indians</h3>

<div class="pre">Cleveland at Boston 8:21 pm EDT</div><div class="pre">American League Championship Series Red Sox lead, 1-0</div>

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox used their star power onFriday night to take the early lead in the American LeagueChampionship Series.

On Saturday, the Red Sox will try to move one step closer to theWorld Series when they host the Cleveland Indians in Game Two.

Sluggers Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz each had three RBI andJosh Beckett allowed two runs in six innings en route to a 10-3victory on Friday.

Boston had no trouble with Indians ace C.C. Sabathia, who lastedjust 4 1/3 innings, surrendering eight runs and seven hitswhile walking five.

"Well, he didn't have it (on Friday)," Indians manager EricWedge said. "His command was off. He was off a little bit withhis fastball, having trouble getting his breaking ball where heneeded to. He was running away from his changeup a little bit.He just never really got in sync."

Wedge hopes the struggles end when Fausto Carmona takes themound in Game Two.

Carmona was spectacular in his first postseason start againstthe New York Yankees in Game Two of the AL Division Series, although he did not factor into the decision. The 23-year-oldrighthander allowed only one run and three hits while strikingout five over nine innings as the Indians went on to a 2-1triumph in 11 innings.

While the strong start helped Carmona build confidence, he isnot stuck in the past, even after finishing the regular seasonwith a 19-8 record and 3.06 ERA.

"Well, I'm very confident anyway," Carmona said. "I know Ithrew a good game in New York. That's in the past, and I'mgoing to try to concentrate and throw a nice game (onSaturday)."

Even though Carmona is not dwelling on his past experiences,Wedge believes that he has become a better player as a result.

"I mean, you talk about a tough young man that understands -tough, intelligent young man that understands what he hasexperienced and how to be a better baseball player for it,Fausto is a great example of that," Wedge said.

The Red Sox counter with Curt Schilling, who has more postseasonexperience than any other pitcher in the 2007 playoffs.

For his career, Schilling is 9-2 with a 1.93 ERA in 16postseason starts. His .818 win percentage is the highest inplayoff history among pitchers with at least 10 decisions.

Schilling attributes his success to execution.

"I can't identify anything other than I think we execute well,"Schilling said. "You have to execute almost perfectly inOctober to be consistently successful, and I think we've donethat."

Schilling was dominant in his last start, pitching sevenscoreless innings as the Red Sox rolled to a 9-1 victory tocomplete a sweep of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in theirAL Division Series on Sunday.

Despite the performance and vast playoff experience, Schillingbelieves that he is the underdog in Game Two, giving Carmona allthe credit.

"This kid is something else," Schilling said. "The game hethrew in New York was just a dominating, dominating outing. He'sas good as anybody I've seen this year, and he was consistent.

"You know, it's been a long time, I think, since I've gone intoa game being an underdog, but given the year he had and the wayhe's throwing, I can absolutely see why people think we're goingto have a hard time winning that game. He's been phenomenal,he's been consistent, his stuff is electric, and he's been funto watch."
