courtesy of Netsdaily: Nachbar Leads Nets Past Sixers in OT - Dan Gelston - AP Preseason Opener: Nachbar's Night - Al Iannazzone - In the 'Zzone Nets 91, Sixers 90 (OT) - Dave D'Alessandro - Nets Blast Nets Edge Sixers in Overtime - Matt McQueeny - New Jersey Nets Boxscore - - NBA.com
I'd love to hear post-game thoughts in this thread. I looked over and read all four recaps, and checked out the box score a few times...and here's what I got from them:
The Nets, without Kidd, VC, RJ, Krstic, Marcus, and Sean. The Sixers, without Korver and Dalembert. Just to get that out of the way. Disappointed Sean Williams didn't play. Glad the big 4 didn't play, they didn't need to, yet. Of course, Boki was extremely impressive. Knocking down clutch 3's, getting to the line, getting into the paint with Smith down there. Extremely impressive from him, I can't wait to see what he brings to the actual season. Wright shot alot. He wasn't afraid to shoot. While he didn't make a good percentage (33%), he did make a clutch 3 pointer, which is impressive from him.
Darrell Armstrong didn't defend too great. Personally, I couldn't give a shit, I figure he doesn't give a shit either...it's just the preseason, and he's a vet.
Other than Louis Williams, another guy on the Sixers to talk about was Jason Smith, a guy every Nets fan should recall as being a possible draft choice. He got 11 points, 4 reb, 4 blocks. 1 block was on Wright, of course, 1 was on Hite, 1 was on Benson(BOOM got that BLOCKED), and not sure about the last block. Hit a clutch jumper....I'd still rather have Williams, and am happy with him and Boone.
Boone was already covered in another thread, so let me just say, his performance was great. I can't wait to see his post defense game, but I'm happy with that 13 points, 11 rebounds. He's still gotta work on free throws, tho.
More on Boki, I just want to quote Dave D., I love what he wrote about him...says alot:
QUOTE

First of all, Boki Nachbar was brilliant - jumpers early, bat-outta-hell drives late. With VC/RJ/Kidd watching from home, Boki was the go-to guy for the night - 35 points (10-for-22, 12-for-14), and he carried them early and late - but especially late.
His best emerged after they had fallen into a 75-72 hole with a minute left in regulation. His response: He drew a charge on Thaddeus Young to get the ball back (Antoine Wright hits a pair of free throws after a nice pump-fake-drive), and two trips later, Boki drives the lane and scores with the left hand to get them within 77-76 with 12.3 ticks left. Louis Williams, who had his way with Darrell Armstrong in the last six minutes, hit one of two at the line, and the Nets went to Boki again. This time, side handoff from D.A., open paint, uncontested drive, and a slam to force overtime.
Then he dominated the OT - two huge 3's, drives and whistles, game-winning free throws with 8.8 ticks left after taking it hard over rookie Jason Smith, who had blocked four shots earlier.
Shows alot from Wright and Boki, I'm so glad they got the chance to make a big impact in a game already, even if it was preseason. It's great to see how they handled different situations: Boki, having enough poise to take the charge. Antoine, who got enough balls to actually take the ball and drive to the rim to get fouled for free throws. Bokie again, who drives in the lane multiple times....and hitting clutch 3's.

Another quote from Dave D.'s article:
QUOTE

"It was a great experience," L-Frank said. "A big focal point of what we've done is end-game execution, poise, discipline. Our guys kept their poise, understood time-score-situation. There were a lot of good things that happened. Obviously the start was tremendous. And the guys who finished the game played a lot of consecutive minutes and fought their tails off. So there were a lot of positive lessons learned tonight."
....I thought this was important, because end-game execution, poise, and discipline was actually a really big problem for us last year. It's great to see Frank kept that in mind, and is trying to get the team to improve on that. Appearantly, some of what they worked on is working.

and Mile Ilic...blah. The only player not to play. He should just go home.

Good thread peg, thanks for rounding that up. Honestly, I do give a **** about Armstrong's defense. For a guy who is a good defensive player, he didn't show it. While it might be the preseason, and its a meaningless game, he's supposedly a guy who goes out and busts his ass day in and day out. I'm wouldn't think you can attribute it to effort so I don't know what the deal with today was.

QUOTE (thedude9990)

are the starters not playing all preseason?

Kidd is not traveling on this trip and will not play til Thursday vs. Knicks. Carter and Jefferson will play Monday vs. Bobcats, but limited minutes.
Krstic unlikely to play til the last two games, Thursday, October 25 at home vs. Sixers, and/or Friday, October 26 on the Garden vs. Knicks.

I'm just surprised Wright and Nachbar played 40 minutes in the first preseason game. Seems like a bit much.

We'll see if they play a lot together in the next game, too.

its only the 1st PRESEASON GAME Wright will probably get better as time goes on............ hmmmm wait he was 5-15 at the freethrow line?! yea that is bad

Louis Williams is reaaaaally good. When he's given the green light to get his he's pretty difficult to stop for anybody, even for DA. That said, one guy can't win a game for you and the team played great around him and did the things down the stretch to win the game. This was a lineup of Armstorng, Nachbar, Wright, Boone, and Allen. How we even got the W is beyond impressive as they actually had starters play abiet for only limited action.

Wright will eventually get a game where he hits most of his shots. People will start to notice if he keeps that confidence.

When they went to the athletic lineup: Williams, Carney and Smith, they took off. Why? because the Nets didnt have athletic enough defenders. Williams didnt just have 33 points. He had 33 points after half time. Smith has now looked good in summer league and in preseason.

Louis Williams could be a darkhorse canidate for Most Improved Player. You never know, especially if Philly is in playoff contention at the end of the season like Frank said they could be.
Antoine Wright needs to make the most of the shots he gets during the season. Needless to say it's going to be hard for him to shoot 33 percent from the field and get 17 points in regular season.

Yeah their regular season second unit beat up on ours, who started and clearly shot their load early, but we still had enough in the end to fight off their attempt at stealing the win. No denying Smith but we still haven't seen the best out of Sean either as Summer League was about conditioning and easing back into the game as much as anything where Smith was fresh off his senior year.

QUOTE (Jizzy)

Antoine Wright sucked. Expect no changes in his game this year.

Yeah, he sucked throughout most of the game...but don't overlook that clutch 3 pointer late in the game, and that drive to the basket to get to the line. That's not really what I'd expect from him.

^ they both wear the same shoes well, what disappointed me about last night's game was the high amount of turnovers. it's the first game of preseason, but I just hope that isn't a prelude of things to come.
Cmon. When you have guys like Cleaves and Gill handling the ball, who wouldn't expect turnovers? This was Armstrongs' first game since last season, I'm sure he was rusty. Preseason hardly indicates anything really.
