Much has been made about the PS3's slow start, but in all fairness, too many people are comparing it to the PS2's dominance. The last generation was a blowout in favor of Sony's system, but nobody really believed that would happen again, what with Microsoft's debut firmly behind them and Nintendo going a new - and profitable - direction with the Wii. Furthermore, just how far behind is the PS3? Really? Well, if you simply look at the hardware sales charts, it's not.

This chart aligns the PS3 and Xbox 360 launches; it's current, so it includes the first 10 months of the PS3 and Wii's existence, and the first 23 months for the Xbox 360. We forget the 360 faced plenty of issues during its first 10 months, and that was without any competition. In the face of both the 360 and Wii, the PS3 has managed to sell just about the same number of units up to this point. And now that we have the price cut and the introduction of the "entry level" 40GB PS3, it seems very possible the PS3 could end up selling more units than the 360 in its first year. The holiday season is almost upon us, and of course, that will tell the final tale of the tape.

As you can see by the chart, the Wii is outstripping the competition, but analysts expect a very close three-way race throughout most of this generation. But we just wanted to point out that, despite all the negative PS3 press (which has admittedly died down over the past few months), the overall sales numbers are right on par with its primary competition when comparing the first year.

I've always thought that PS3 just needed some time to prove itself. Bashing the PS3 now is like berating a newborn for not walking. If the PS3 is selling the same amount with very little great games in comparison, what happens when the killer apps start rolling in next year? Same ammount? And it is not even holiday season yet. PS3 will really do well by the end of this year with games like Metal Gear, Killzone, and Gran Turismo.I read in a Game Informer that PS3 in its first 3 months had outsold Xbox 360 in its first 3 months, the reason it seemed like it didn't sell out was because there was no demand for the 20GB, there were plenty of those on the shelves, but now they have all the options of 20,40,60,80, plus more reasonable prices, great deals actually, of course it's selling like crazy and it should be a busy Christmas.

I remember reading how useless the 360 was the first year or so, the reason no one complained was because it was the only next gen system out.

Who's saying the PS3's selling bad? People are just expecting it to be at 120 million sold and continue from where the PS2 left off.PS3 will not be in homes until it reaches the 200 dollar price range, then you'll start seeing people purchasing the hardware.

$200? Around $300 is fine for me. Hopefully it will be around that area by the time Christmas comes by.

Thats the truth CelticBlood. Only in the beginning they had problems with the xbox, I bought mine (first one) on Nov. 06 and after two or three weeks it kept breaking down, you'd have to turn it off and then turn it back on again. I returned that one and then bought my second one (which I currently have) about 4 months ago, and I've never had a single problem with it.

They have fixed the problem with the over heating and even if something breaks down, thats what warranties are for.

Dude read the title again, you said "PS3 first year sales on par with xbox 360" and you are saying that it has nothing to do with the xbox?

Do you even know what you are talking about?

This thread was meant for the PS3 and how it sold the same amount as 360 with very little games while 360 was released a year before the PS3 with a bunch of games meaning I am showing how good PS3 it will do next year, with all the GB choices and loads of new games coming in 08. Yes I added words saying "360" but the main point of this thread is for PS3.

Re-read what you said again and you'll see that this thread is about both the ps3 and the 360.

The PS2 doubled its userbase when it dropped from $299 to $199. While $300 is fine by you, I guess $300 is not find by the other 25 million people.
