As the bus rounded corner after corner in the Crescent City's ravaged Lower Ninth Ward, the chatter in the back went from a low murmur to complete silence.

And then an eerie, deafening silence.

John Bryson, the New Orleans Police Deputy Superintendent who stood at the front of the bus as the Hawks toured the devastation that Hurricane Katrina wrought on this city, finally broke the silence with this punch to the gut.

"If you look to your left," Bryson said, "that's where the barge hit the levee and broke through. The waters were coming in here at 200 to 300 miles an hour. As you can imagine, anything that didn't have a brick foundation got washed away."

Bryson served as the Hawks' tour guide, if that's what you call someone who witnessed what he did more than two years ago amid the chaos that was Katrina, for the final 45 minutes of a tour that helped observers understand the reality of the disaster.

The TV networks didn't do justice to the damage, Hawks guard Salim Stoudamire said. He's sure of that now after seeing it all in person.

"When I watch CNN, I'm always conscious of the twist," Stoudamire said as he trudged, stone-faced, into the Hawks' five-star hotel on Canal Street after a two-hour bus tour of the city. "Seeing it firsthand, man ... it looks like a nightmare. People had that looking on their face like there was no hope.

"It really made me sick to my stomach just thinking about it. I started writing a poem about it just to make sure I could capture my thoughts about what we saw."

    Rebuilding still ongoing

Tuesday afternoon marked the Hawks' first trip to New Orleans since Katrina, a category 3 storm that tore through this city in August 2005 and displaced —- many to this day —- the more than 465,000 people who called New Orleans home.
