Spurs hoping for quick Ramos deal after axing Jol
LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham are hoping to have Sevilla coach Juande Ramos installed as their new manager within a week after finally sacking Martin Jol. The popular Dutchman, whose position has been the subject of intense speculation all season, was informed of his dismissal prior to the club's 2-1 UEFA Cup defeat by Getafe on Thursday night. Bookmakers have stopped taking bets on Ramos being named as his successor, although it remains unclear whether the Spaniard will be willing to quit a club he has guided to successive UEFA Cup wins and which is still involved in this season's Champions League. Jol and his assistant Chris Hughton paid the price for a disastrous start to the season which has left Spurs third from bottom of the Premier League and with no realistic chance of achieving their goal of breaking into the Champions League elite of English football. Despite that, the Dutchman is well-liked among the Tottenham faithful and was given a warm reception by the fans as news of his dismissal filtered around White Hart Lane just after half-time on Thursday. Sections of the crowd also vented their anger against chairman Daniel Levy, who was among a group of Spurs officials who were caught out having what were supposed to be secret talks with Ramos at the start of the season. Ramos later confirmed that there had been an offer from Spurs but then vowed to stay in Spain for the rest of the season. It now appears that Levy has either had assurances that the Sevilla manager is ready to leave or has decided to deliver a "now or never" ultimatum in order to force his top target into a decision. If Ramos, who speaks only limited English, does come, it is expected that former Spurs and Uruguay midfielder Gus Poyet, who is currently on the coaching staff at Leeds, will act as his assistant and intermediary with the players. Leeds said Friday they had not had any approach concerning Poyet and insisted it "would not be welcome." Should Ramos decide to stay in Seville, Mark Hughes is likely to be elevated to Tottenham's top target and the Blackburn boss conspicuously failed to rule himself out of the running, while stressing his commitment to his current club. "I've seen my name a couple of times linked with it but I just view that as a reflection on the job myself and the staff are doing here, and the players are doing," the former Manchester United and Barcelona forward said. "My interest is solely in Blackburn Rovers." Hughes would inevitably be tempted by the opportunity to move to a club the size of Spurs but made it clear he believes a deal has already been done to bring Ramos to the Lane. "I would suggest any appointment that's to be made is obviously in place," he said. Jol had been in charge at Spurs for three years, and guided them to fifth-placed finishes in the Premier League during his only full seasons at White Hart Lane. They were within touching distance of the Champions League two seasons ago but were hit by a mystery virus on the final day of the season, when a defeat at West Ham allowed Arsenal to snatch the crucial fourth place from their grasp. Heavy investment in the squad this summer - and retaining the services of Dimitar Berbatov - saw expectation rise in the boardroom. The aim was the top four but Jol could only manage one win with more than a quarter of the season already gone. Levy said: "For me, Martin and Chris's departure is regrettable. Our greatest wish was to see results turn in our favour and for there to be no need for change. "They have been professional, popular and respected members of the coaching staff and there will always be a warm welcome for them both at the Lane." Jol added: "I can understand the position of the club in light of the results. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Tottenham Hotspur is a special club and I want to thank the terrific staff and players. "For me the fans were always amazing with their support so I would also like to say thank you - I shall never forget them." Development coach Clive Allen and youth team boss Alex Inglethorpe will take charge of the first team for Sunday's game against Blackburn.

That would be a great move by the Spurs to get Ramos. He is one of the top coaches in La Liga.
Not sure how they'll be able to get him though.

The Sevilla organization is denying it but according to players and others, Ramos is considering the move.
