Oct 29 - T.J. Ford, Toronto's starting point guard, will earn a base salary of about $8 million this year, but Ford acknowledged that he can earn bonuses for leading the league in assists and for every playoff-round victory, among other things. Bryan Colangelo, the Raptors general manager, said that if Ford achieved all the incentives in his deal, he could earn as much as an additional $1 million.

"All T.J.'s incentives are based on the team's success," said Colangelo. "To have playoff-based incentives is really the one thing that truly, in my opinion, is the legitimate way to reward people."

Colangelo said he doesn't like incentives on one hand, because they bring uncertainty to the team's already-complex financial picture. But the kinds of incentives built into Ford's deal are seen as more beneficial to the cause than the alternatives, particularly the rewarding of scoring average and minutes played. -- Toronto Star

I think only a "special" kind of player would really change the way he plays depending on a bonus structure in his contract. Even then after ten or twenty regular season games I'm sure the vast majority of guys would fall back into whatever playing mode they are used to.

I like the idea of "team-based" performance incentives, especially for the point guard.

Yeah, especially with the assists and wins. That makes it so if he wants that money, he's gotta feed his teammates and help his team get the W.
