NEW YORK (Ticker) - The New Jersey Devils have enjoyed thegoaltending edge in their meetings with the New York Rangers forsome time. Now that the Rangers have Henrik Lundqvist andMartin Brodeur is getting older, they seem to be gaining someground in that area.


Lundqvist made 28 saves and stopped all three shots he faced inthe shootout and Petr Prucha had the only tally in the bonusformat to lead the Rangers to a 2-1 victory over the Devils onSaturday night at Madison Square Garden.


After the first two shooters failed to score, Prucha got thebetter of Brodeur with a nifty fake. Coming in straight on,Prucha faked a shot and got Brodeur to go down just slightlybefore lifting a shot over his shoulder for the only tally ofthe shootout.


Lundqvist stopped Zach Parise, Brian Gionta and John Madden togive the Rangers their first three-game winning streak of theseason.


In 1993-94, Brodeur's rookie season, the Rangers swept thesix-game series, but over the next decade the rivalry in thenets belonged to Brodeur. The three-time Vezina Trophy winnerwon 29 of the 51 meetings but since Lundqvist has joined theRangers in 2005, the tide has swung in favor of the Swede.Lundqvist has two wins against the Devils this season and is7-2-3 lifetime against New Jersey.


Lundqvist, who along with Calgary's Miikka Kiprusoff and SanJose's Evgeni Nabokov are the only goaltenders to appear inevery game this season, has allowed two goals or less in 10starts this season and came in with a 1.67 goals againstaverage. One of those games was a 22-save shutout of the Devilson October 25.


The Rangers supported Lundqvist early on Saturday as they scoredthe first goal just 6:01 into the game. Former Devil ScottGomez scored his third goal of the season off an assist fromPrucha. But before Gomez's tally could be announced SergeiBrylin tied it 33 seconds later.


Playing in his second game against Brodeur since signing as afree agent with the Rangers, Gomez stationed himself in front ofhis former teammate and when Prucha's shot was kicked out byBrodeur, Gomez used his backhand to put home the rebound.

Brylin, who was another longtime teammate of Gomez, tied it whendefenseman Johnny Oduya came out from behind the right post andwhipped a perfect centering pass that the Russian winger putpast Lundqvist.


Lundqvist kept the game tied with a glove save on defensemanMike Mottau with just over 5 1/2 minutes to play, while Brodeuralso kept it even when he denied Petr Prucha on an odd-man rushwith 1:46 remaining in the period.


The goalies continued their duel in the second as Lundqvistsprawled to make a glove save on Travis Zajac's attempteddeflection of a Gionta shot with 11 1/2 minutes remaining. Justover three minutes later, Brodeur robbed Gomez with anotherglove save.


Both continued to remain on their games in the third asLundqvist denied Gionta's stuff attempt and then stopped DavidClarkson and made a stick save on Michael Rupp. Brodeur's bestsave of the third came with just under 12 minutes remaining whenhe got his glove on a point-blank shot by Chris Drury.
