Sebastian Telfair is no stranger to getting opportunities. But Friday night he got his first with the Timberwolves as the team's starting point guard for the season opener against Denver.

It took an injury to Randy Foye to open a spot for Telfair, who will have a chance to prove himself in the coming weeks while Foye mends his injured knee. The Wolves played host to Denver at Target Center to kick off the season.

This is Telfair's third team in four NBA seasons. His previous stints in Portland and Boston didn't work out because of legal issues off the court and erratic play on it.

"I definitely feel more mature," Telfair said before his team's 99-91 loss at Target Center. "I think I'm more professional now."

As the team's starting point guard, at least for the short term, the Wolves need him to be solid running the offense. Telfair's sometimes flashy play isn't in the job description.

A simple pass. A sensible shot. Leadership. That's what the Wolves need from Telfair.

"Witt's asking us as point guards to keep us organized and go out there and play with energy," Telfair said of coach Randy Wittman.

Telfair's quickness helped push the tempo and get the Wolves' offense off to a good start, a 19-6 lead against Denver.

"Definitely early on, we felt pretty good," Telfair said. "Getting guys open shots, running the team, getting into the plays that were working."

Telfairdid play great, but we need Foye back so we can get Jaric's butt where it belongs, on the bench. When Telfair was in the speed was up tempo the whole time, and the ball movement was great. When Marko would come in, that would all dissapear. I know Foye would keep the speed up tempo because that's how he plays. We are going to miss him a lot. Telfair will be fine as the starter, but we really need a better backup.

I don't think the Wolves need to panic and scramble for another point guard. Foye will be back in a few weeks, and a 3-guard rotation of Randy Foye, Rashad McCants, and Sebastian Telfair look good right now. Going out and making a push for another point guard is pointless for this team, because they aren't going anywhere any time soon. Let the young guys play. Whether you bring in another guard at the caliber of Beno Udrih or not, won't make a difference.

Tim, Wolves fans on another forum I read seemed to be very impressed with Telfair not only running the offense and moving the ball, but on the defensive end as well. I've always been a big Bassy supporter, but I haven't complimented his defense too often. Did he really do a good job in that department?

He was hustling hard to keep up with AI and did a fair job of it. He obviously didn't shut the guy down, that's impossible to do. But he certainly did play good defense and did a good job trying to contain one of the best scorers of all time. I am very impressed with this kidI hopethis continues.
