QUOTE

Jonathan Feigan of the Houston Chronicle is clearly upset with Magic Johnson, and the double standard which seems to apply to the former Laker great. Who does Magic Johnson work for, asks Feigan? When he is introduced as Lakers vice president, does that mean he works for the Lakers? Magic described Luol Deng as the Bulls best player, one the Lakers would of course covet. He spoke of the Pacers' Jermaine O'Neal. He blatantly was tampering, at least as it applies to other employees of NBA teams. Lakers coach Phil Jackson would be fined for that, as he was last season when he said nothing beyond the obvious about Chris Bosh. Magic, however, is a beloved NBA made man. No one is going to call him out. But if next season he says that Deng should sign a one-year contract and become an unrestricted free agent, one the Lakers for example would love, wouldn't the Bulls have a right to suggest he chose a career and go with that.

Source

Magic has been making comments like this everytime he's a guest analyst on TNT. He's never been fined so I imagine he has some type of deal worked out with the NBA's board of directors to have the freedom to discuss other players and whether or not the Lakers would want them. Hopefully this writer gets an answer from the league offices and does a follow up piece about it.
I've always wondered why Magic got away with it and sometimes I wonder why he's saying anything like that to public to begin with.

I wonder a lot about Magic, honestly. Why is he still alive?
He needs to shut up about the whole Kobe situation though and just let it play its course, whatever happens..happens.

QUOTE (Mamba)

I wonder a lot about Magic, honestly. Why is he still alive?

This is why I say Magic is better the MJ. Magic can beat AIDS, Jordan would cry if he got a paper cut

Maybe it has to do with his position with the Lakers. If its just a figurehead position, where he doesn't actually have any say in what's happening, I can see the NBA letthing him get away with these statements. Otherwise its clearly tampering.
