Nov 7 - Nobody can ever be sure what motivates a player, but consider this: Antoine Wright is playing the best ball of his career immediately after the Nets rejected him, so to speak.

Of course, he says there is no cause-effect here, and his agent confirms it.

"What he's doing right now is not a byproduct of the Nets not taking the option," for a fourth year. "But the struggle he had in preseason was probably a byproduct of him worrying about it," said Andy Miller, the Bergen County-based agent who represents the Nets wing.

"But now that it's past, I think he's at ease with it. My feeling on the whole thing is it's almost a blessing not to have restricted free agency (after) that fourth year. We'll be in a better position ... unrestricted." -- Newark Star-Ledger

antoine is playing like a 6th man of the year winner right now. not only points, but hes getting rebounds now and his points are during critical parts of the game this year. glad for antoine hopefully he can continue everything he is doing.

plus he is not committing stupid turnovers anymore which is a huge plus.

I don't think this is a coincidence, he did not exhibit this type of consistency in preseason. I think for the first time since Texas A&M he has motivation to play.....his NBA life could have ended this year. Antoine Wright NJ Nets 2005-2008. He doesn't want that, it's a good life and the extras are nice. The kid is motivated for selfish reasons.

Honestly if he goes out next summer and gets a 3 year 12 million dollar deal, good luck to you and your new team, thanks for the great 07-08 season.

Agreed. It's going to be a tough off-season for us especailly if Magloire starts hitting his groove as well.

We won't have the depth we have this year. Kidd, VC, RJ, Collins, Marcus, Sean, Boone are the only ones under contract beyond this season. If guys like Sean and Marcus prove they are ready to take the next step, that's 2 positions we do not need to add much depth at. A minimum 3rd PG maybe, but not someone we need to count on. If Sean some how gives us hope that he is a starter iin this league on this team, that solves our PF issue. We have Collins to backup the 4-5 positions. I think we have 57 committed those 7. Assuming Krstic has a starting salary of 8 million, that leaves us 2 million under the lux tax for next season....to spend on about 5-6 players.

I'm positive Magloire will be gone next year. If he sucks, hte nets won't want him back; if he's good, the Nets will recognize that someone else can step in and fill that role cheaper.

I hope that Wright gets devalued somewhat, so we can keep him. So far he's only prooved that he can play in motion offense (could see him doing well on the Lakers also).
Hopefully he dosen't feel jilted by the contract rejection, and wants to make it to Brooklyn.
I hope that the guys who figure out how to keep him here do a good job.

I think a lot of rookies hold back because they know the real money is on the second contract. Some run the risk of not showing enough to get the big dough second time around, though.

As for Wright, I think he's playing really well because of the free agency he'll enjoy at the end of the season. His teammates and Coach are giving him this opportunity precisely because of it.

I felt he had it in him. Hopefully, he'll earn his worth and re-sign with New Jersey.

Mikki Moore was a product of playing with Jason Kidd and the Nets. He's been exposed and is not doing that well up in SAC.

All the same, the money was slightly better. Butwith a younger player with a longer horizon like Wright, I thinkhe's probably better off with Kidd & Co. than elsewhere. He could end up like Mikki Moore in SAC.

I hate to bury this in the middle of this thread, but . . .

The trio of Kidd-Wright-RJ has been on the court together for nearly 48 minutes--a full game. During that time the nets have scored 101 points and given up 77. SEVENTY-SEVEN! Methinks we'll see this combo a little more.

The quartet of Kidd-Wright-Carter-Jefferson has been on the court for about 29 and a half minutes. During that time the nets have scored 66 points and given up 52, despite Carter's misery. Over a full game, that projects to 107 points scored and 85 given up.

Add Collins to that quartet, and the nets have scored 53 points and surrendered 39 in 25 and a half minutes. That projects to 100 points scored and 73 points scored per 48 minutes. SEVENTY THREE!!!

[which implies that the Kidd-Wright-Carter-Jefferson quartet has been pretty average without Collins, scoring 13 and giving up 13 in just four minutes, with Armstrong, Nachbar, or Boone as the fifth guy]

You think we'll continue to see these combinations?

You think about the situations that are out there, if Jordan's still in Washington next year, he may fit there, Adelman's in Houston, poster in Golden State were excited to see we didn't pick up his option. So he's going to have options, its the matter of money and PT, I think he won't mind being the first wing off the bench. Also depends who else will be on the market, but his unrestricted status is very attractive if he keeps up his pace. Honestly I wouldn't mind seeing him go, because I think he will revert once he has the contract. Dampier was like that in Golden State his contract year, then he was shit after that.

Wright was compared to Ray Allen (Draft Express), Dwyane Wade (Dick Vitale on ESPN), Joe Johnson (HoopsWorld and others) and Allan Houston (Ed Stefanski) when he was drafted. He hasn't been remotely as good as Danny Granger or Gerald Green, who were drafted in back of him. I don't think either will be close to reality. I think he will be better than Green and close to Granger before he is done. He is still only 23, younger than Alando Tucker, Al Thornton and a few other 2007 draftees. Players develop at different speeds...decline at different speeds too. He just took longer. I don't think he wanted to take this long. I think he just needed time psychologically and physically.

If he continues to play at this level, I don't see him sticking around for another year to caddy for RJ and VC. He will want an opportunity to prove his mettle as a starter. Good for him, but bad for the Nets for not picking up his option.

Wright is also compared to Poorman's acid trip induced version of Kobe Bryant by Jarkid & GMJigga.

He will be a strong player, but can we stay him next season?

    Something like that.

Assuming for a moment that everyone keeps playing the way they are now, we could sign Wright but not Boki, and get Magloire at a discount

I remember Wright being compared to Eddie Jones, which is an excellent comparison.

great post dumpy. kidd,aw,rj are our best small 3 we can send out on the defensive end. i would still LOVE to see sean play with this trio or just play period. yeah the kid is raw, but if you put him out there with our best defenders they can make him look good and he could make them look good as well. i just wish frank would give the kid a chance, doesnt have to be in crunch time obviously.

vince has a rep of being a bad defender, but watching him i can say he does really try and has had lively hands so far this year. i think vince wants to become a complete player and he will never be a great defender but i think he is making the effort to improve his defense and i do see a difference in his play this year. it also looks like everyone has bought into D first that frank preaches this year as well even though we did get blown out in game2.

Exactly. Which is why we need to dump Vince for some serviceable role players. Maybe we can pawn Vince and Magloire off to the Lakers for Bynum, Brown, and Radmanovic. [IMG] (In my dreams)
