OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Whether or not it offers anyrelief following last season's playoff demise, the DallasMavericks can claim they have temporarily figured out the GoldenState Warriors.

Jason Terry scored 24 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 22 to powerthe Mavericks past the Warriors, 120-115, on Thursday.

Last season, the Warriors became the first eighth seed to defeata No. 1 seed in a seven-game playoff series when they toppledthe powerhouse Mavericks in six games. Dallas, which posted aleague-best 67 wins, seemed destined to play in the NBA Finalsuntil they were upset by the underdog Warriors.

The Mavericks appeared to play with that knowledge, continuingto keep Golden State at bay when they needed to as the Warriorswere unable to ever take a lead in the fourth quarter despitenever leading by more than five points in this one.

Trailing, 118-115, with seven seconds remaining, Baron Davisfreed himself and attempted a wide-open, potential game-tying3-pointer that came up just short. Devin Harris collected therebound and was fouled immediately by Al Harrington.

Harris hit both free throws to account for the final margin, which was symbolic of the entire game. The Mavericks hit26-of-30 attempts from the free-throw line while the Warriorswere able to convert just 16-of-30.

The win was just Dallas' third victory in its last 12 gamesagainst Golden State, breaking a five-game regular-season losingstreak against the Warriors.

Davis scored 37 points and Kelenna Azubuike added 27 to go alongwith a career-high 11 rebounds for the Warriors, who lost fivegames in a row to open the season for the second time in thelast four seasons.

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Whether or not it offers anyrelief following last season's playoff demise, the DallasMavericks can claim they have temporarily figured out theGolden State Warriors.

Appearing to play with the poise they lacked during theplayoffs, the Mavericks continued to keep Golden State at baywhen they needed to as the Warriors were able to only take onefourth-quarter lead at 101-100.

What made that unusual is that Dallas never led by more thanfive points throughout the final quarter.

"Anytime you can beat a team that's beaten you six times (in theplayoffs), there's definitely some satisfaction and somethingthat we needed," Terry said. "If we lose that game, then we'restill thinking about it. It's not the championship or anythinglike that but, for us, it definitely helps our confidence."

The win was just Dallas' third victory in its last 12 gamesagainst Golden State, breaking a five-game regular-season losingstreak against the Warriors.

"We've been scratching our heads and pulling our hair out abouttrying to stop this team," Dallas coach Avery Johnson said."They're not a 'Cinderella' team, so every night you've got toplay against them. But the main thing is you can't pull yourhair out trying to stop them."

Trailing, 118-115, with seven seconds remaining, Baron Davisfreed himself and attempted a wide-open, potential game-tying3-pointer that came up just short. Devin Harris collected therebound and was fouled immediately by Al Harrington.

"I think we got a little fortunate at the end," Nowitzki said."You don't want to give a hot man like Baron Davis a clean looklike that at a three, and it almost looked like he had it, so wegot a little lucky there at the end."

Harris hit both free throws to account for the final margin, which was symbolic of the entire game. The Mavericks hit26-of-30 attempts from the free-throw line while the Warriorswere able to convert just 16-of-30.

"That's the way they play, they play hard and at a rapid pace,"Terry said. "(It's a) good thing they did miss those freethrows and we came out with the win."

"It's definitely a good win," Nowitzki said. "Obviously, theywere winless and they made shots today. Their crowd was in it.Definitely at the end, (it was) a tough game but a good win forus."

Davis scored 37 points and Kelenna Azubuike added 27 to go alongwith a career-high 11 rebounds for the Warriors, who lost fivegames in a row to open the season for the second time in thelast four seasons.

"I don't mind people counting us out, who cares?" Davis said."I believe in my teammates and I know they all believe in me,and we believe in our coach and this system is going to work.

"Because in the long run, when teams get tired we're not goingto be tired. We're going to be fully manned and we're going tobe able to run teams out of the gym."

Golden State defintely had a chance to tie the game at the end. Nelson created a ridiculous play that sent Baron Davis off three screen for a wide-open three.I don't think anyone expected him to get that wide open.

Re: NBA: DALLAS (3-1) at GOLDEN STATE (0-4)

Yeah, it sucks that GS is 0-5 but they've actually been playing pretty damn good. Harrington has been ice-water from 3pt-range, and Azibuike has been an all-around stud. If it wasn't for the record I'd have said this team was rolling! It's really defense, though, that's the problem. And it's strange because the Warriors get lots of deflections, forced turnovers, etc. But then teams just knock-down shot-after-shot-after-shot on them. Cleveland put on a little shooting drill, and then last night Howard/Terry/Dirk/Stack all just drained jumper after jumper. I think maybe with the zone, because GS is small, Nellie has been trying to pack it in a bit and force teams to beat them from the outside. Unfortunately, they've been playing teams that can flat out shhot. (Even the Clippers were stroking it if I remember correctly).

I know it's early, but 5 losses is a tough way to start your 2007-2008 playoff campaign. GS needs to get it GOING here soon or they'll dig too deep a hole.

Re: NBA: DALLAS (3-1) at GOLDEN STATE (0-4)

That game was just horrible because if you think about it, the Warriors beat themselves. I mean the foul line troubles were a disgrace because our team is mostly made up of guards... Those small guys should be able to shoot at least 80%, but instead we get 70% or below. How on earth do we stay competitive with that when one player gets suspended for 7 games. That shouldn't matter because of our supposed depth. But damn... we lose because guys can't hit over half their free throws. That is a bit pathetic and I'm sure most boys and girls high school and junior high teams could do better.

16-30 on free throws with Ellis, Azu, Baron making most attempts... WTF? What is really surprising is that Azu is supposed to be a good free throw shooters. Well maybe he does have the ankle excuse, but what is Baron and Ellis' problem?

Bingo. Didn't the Warriors bring in Paul Pressey to teach guys how to shoot FTs? He's obviously doing something wrong or the players are tuning him out. "Yeah yeah whatever" type attitudes perhaps?

This seems to be an ongoing problem for the Warriors they've been struggling at the free throw line for the last 4 or 5 seasons and it makes their job of winning a lot more difficult.

The zebras were horrendous last night and completely ruined the flow of the game.

The Warriors did another outstanding job in frustrating Dirk and Biedrins finally showed up for the first time all season.

He finished with 10 rebounds and 5 blocks, and finally decided to finish with two hands instead of being a finess player.

Baby steps for now until SJax returns.
