QUOTE

Davis Unlikley To Opt Out

Nov 14 - Baron Davis gave the strongest indication yet Tuesday that he will not exercise an option to become a free agent after the season, a welcome development for the Golden State Warriors even as he expressed great disappointment at not getting an extension after leading the electric playoff run last spring.

"I don't think so," Davis told The Bee when asked if he plans to opt out of his contract in the summer of 2008. "I don't think that's going to be an issue. I've got two years. Opting out, I'll figure it out when the season's over, but I doubt it." -- Sacramento Bee

It could have a lot to to with many factors, such as
-- Whether the Warriors finish the year 32-48 or 48-32.
-- Whether Nelson indicates he wants to come back for another year.
-- Baron's health. If he's injured much of this year, he probably won't want to test free agency.
-- If the Warriors make trades during the season indicating they're either leaning towards rebuilding or going all in for a playoff run.
Personally I don't know. Love Baron, but re-signing him could, under the right circumstances, hurt this franchise for a long time. They have an opportunity right now to actually build a good team for the longterm with the young pieces they already have and some shrewd trades and signings which Mully looks like he's finally getting the hang of. Then again, it's hard to let a potentially All-Star caliber point guard with some flair that the marketing folks must like, who is less than 30 years old, just walk away.

To me Baron's health IS the issue. He's not opting out because of it. He's already needing to have his knee drained because of swelling and fluid build up. It's probably due to the pressure his knee is taking during the game. We want to see Baron succeed, but I think he'll need help.To save Baron for the playoffs, we need SJax back badly. Also, Monta Ellis needs to step up and take the backup PG spot.

I believe Baron is up in the same year as Deron Williams or Chris Paul. That would be great if we could get either. I mean I love Baron, but his style of game is getting old. He's just not an efficient type of baller. He's like Antoine Walker in a point guard body, but I guess he does the things that pure point guards do. Its not like we have great options behind him or a surefire chance of getting a top tier point guard when they got other teams' bird rights attached. Baron is better than nothing right now, but I believe he could hurt us at maximum potential, especially free throw and shot accuracy wise. The guy is no Jason Kidd at 40%.
